My first hour with Far Cry 2

gorcorps

aka Brandon
I just got Far Cry 2 through goozex, where I had some spare points and figured I'd try this one out.

This is one of the most frustrating shooters I've ever dealt with... and for all the wrong reasons. Shotguns that are as accurate at long range as an SMG, but only in the hands of the enemy as you haven't gotten those upgrades yet. Friends will come to your aid when you're dying, but if they die after helping you then you never get a chance to get their side missions. Their accuracy with all of the guns is stunning and makes the game damn near impossible at this point.

Maybe I'm just terrible at the game, but some of the design ideas just make the game no fun at all. I might drop it down to easy and see if I enjoy it anymore, or I may just resell it.

Does this game get any better or is it total frustration through and through?

IMO the game is close to being very good, but is ultimately just frustrating to play.

For example, it seems like your next mission is always on the opposite side of the map from where you picked up the assignment. FC2 is hardly the only game to do this in an effort of lengthen the game, but traveling in FC2 is a PITA. You can't drive 100 meters without suddenly being pursued. Clearing out guard posts on roads is worthless since they respawn way too fast for that to be of any use at all. The buses help a bit, but after a while it's just not enough, it still gets frustrating. Oh, and the whole malaria thing, just damned annoying.

I really wanted to like the game, but eventually I just stopped playing because the game was too tedious.

I gave up after a few hours. I got tired of trekking all over the frigging map for missions while being ambushed multiple times along the way.

Agreed. Lots of potential, nice big map and kind of an open world feeling. Reminds me of Mercenaries though, not enough freedom and boring-ish story.
Nice technology though.

I found it very fun and played it all the way through. The graphics blew me away. The repeated ambushes at every intersection did get a little tiresome, it would have been nice if after you cleared out one of those checkpoints that it stayed clear, or at least was clear for a couple days in game time rather than driving down the road, coming back and having to clear it again. Overall though the combat was fun. I went the stealthy route. Most of the time I carried a sniper rifle as my primary weapon and picked people off from the edges. If it had been a co-op game it would have one of the best shooters ever IMO, the trucks with mounted guns were begging for a second player. As it was, I'd still give it a solid 8.

What everyone else has said is true, do some searching and you'll find fifty threads saying the same things. If you can get over the nonstop ambushes whenever you try to travel and/or enjoy stealth, you can make it through the game. And it is a good game overall, it's just that it could have been much better.

The first thing I recommend you to do is do as much work for the arms dealer as possible and get a grenade launcher, silent smg, and dart rifle. The dart rifle is very quiet and is a one shot kill. The silent smg is an ok weapon and won't alert the entire camp if you need to take care of a couple guards that are right next to each other. The grenade launcher is for the inevitable jeep ambushes (or ambushing them before they ambush you), just don't miss because reloads are slow and you can only carry about five shots at a time. Those are all weapons you'll have access to in the first half of the game, and you'll get some really nice toys in the second half.

Take advantage of the many safehouses; save often, always move at night, and always do the buddy objectives in the main missions since they reward you with safehouse upgrades like ammo and first aid. Also, being stealthy is always important, but is much more important in the first half of the game because of the terrain and the relative impotence of the available weaponry.

Ah, another fun and useful option is a flare gun instead of a nade launcher. In grassland areas you can kill ten guys with wildfires in one sitting, and it's great for distractions too. It won't save you when you're faced with a charging jeep, but it's much more tactically useful if you're in a dry area.

Snipers and stealth are key I found. Buy the camo suit, it's awesome. Travel at night or by river. I find the rivers are a very effective way to get around quickly and they go places the bus doesn't. The malaria things is kinda dumb, overall the game is fun though. It gets super cool after about the 39% stage when you get access to some neat new stuff. Your buddies dying isn't really a huge issue, you'll get more. But yeah, move at night, crouch and camo are your friends, you can literally walk right up behind people and knife them. Don't pick up guns, they all suck.

I found uninstall.exe to be the solution to the game's terribleness. Sorry, guess I'm still bitter. =( Really liked the first one.

Its just not one of those games that keeps you that's for sure, but I'd say its great if you like to play a game only every once in a while and don't mind stepping away from it.

I've never played the game, what is the malaria thing? Swatting mosquitoes?

After every, I dunno, thirty minutes of gameplay your vision goes all blurry and if you don't pop a pill quick enough you'll pass out. It can be REALLY inconvenient because it can happen at any time. When you're swimming, driving through a checkpoint, in a firefight, whenever.

And you have limited quantities of the pills, so when you're out you have to make a trip (usually a long one) to get more pills.

What the hell were the designers thinking with the outposts in the game? Stop fucking attacking me!! No other game in the world is designed like this, and for good reasons...

So I've put in a bit more time, and things are a bit more fun. Well... maybe not FUN but definitely less irritating. I focused on doing some missions for the weapons guy to unlock better weapons, which has helped. I now have a sniper rifle as main, and a light machine gun as my special and they're both pretty solid. The guard outposts are still annoying and respawn WAY too fast after clearing.

Although it's getting better I doubt I'll see it all the way through. Mass Effect 2 is coming out soon, and I also just discovered Saints Row 2.

What killed the game for me was the whole malaria thing. It seemed contrived and cheesy.

Personally I think the game has some pacing issues. I ran out of steam when trying to complete it (
I made it through to the beginning of the next map and then stopped
, plus I had issues (like most people) with the respawning guard posts. It's a dificult design choice to get around. But I still think overall it's a very cool game concept and I do intend to go back and play it. The atmosphere (especially the weather system!) is insanely immersive. Plus I love the Malaria thing!

I thought it was one of the most interesting aspects of the entire game.

To me, the whole idea of the protagonist sickened with an infectious disease that had real gameplay effects on the player really grounded to me as a gamer. What I mean by that is--not knowing really when you were going to be struck by a convulsion (or fever or shiver or vomiting or all three) that would stop you dead in your tracks, was frightening. It placed this, slight but constant, fear in the back of my mind knowing that it could strike at any time--even during a gun fight! And it didnt happen enough, in my opinion, to cripple the game or for me to find it bothersome.

It was a stark reminder of just how human and fragile the protagonist really was, trying to survive in those harsh conditions. He wasnt an impossibily thick grunt packing 247lbs of armor (a la Gears of War) with guns the size of a bus--he was just a dude who could die at any moment.

The game tries to make some kind of statement about africa. Especially at the end. I think it is graphically the best game I have seen that is multiplatform and open world. Some have said that it is the best sniping game ever created. I wish they had added some neutral civilians in it, its unrealistic that everyone starts shooting at you on sight. The facial animations could use some work, the voice acting could use some work too. It is frustrating to have to fight or avoid guard posts just to get across the map (but some people claim that is how some parts of africa are). I really look forward to far cry 3, the tech in far cry 2 was amazing, if they just fix some of those frustrations it will be an amazing game. Also, part of me wishes it was third person in stead of first person.

Constant danger. It does sound like a good simulation of parts of Africa.

FC 2 suffers from the fact that it is a Ubisoft game. Their MO is to develop an interesting idea, and then make the player do it over so many times that it becomes tedious.
