Working in debt consolidation has helped me gain a good grasp on what to avoid and which companies to avoid.... That being said... What cards do ya'll reccomend for my first credit card?

Im a full time student in the fall & spring, but have a full time summer job right now which pays a fairly decent wage...

I was thinking of gettin an Amex Blue (sucks because it dosent have the BVG anymore, but there is also no yearly charges)

Which was your first card, and what do you reccomend?

(P.S. I thought about getting a student card, but the rates just suck on those)

First CC was a First Financial Visa. Got it the day I turned 18, and still have it today. Credit limit has jumped up over 15 times now. (Not 15 jumps, but a jump of credit limit being 15 times that of original) I also have a BB card, Discover, Master Card and Visa through my bank, and recently cancelled my AMEX Blue for students.

Hmmm, you don't want a student card because of the rates? You do intend on paying your balance in full every month, don't you? In that case the interest rate is irrelevant.

Plus, if I had only one card I'd want a Mastercard or Visa, it's accepted at more places than AmEx.

i got my first CC from MBNA, i got it in 1998 as a student in college the intial limit was $1500, if you pay your bills on time they just keep uping your limit every month, my limit on that card now is $27K.

They have excellent customer service and always have been very courteous and helpful whenever i need something from them.

Hehe, just dont ever try to consolidate it. :) (i.e. they dont give very good benefits compared to many other companies)

As questioned above, i do plan on paying the cards in full every month. My worry about the interest rates was mearly just as a protection factor (say if i had to use the card in an emergency, in which case the interest rate could become very impt).

What about benefits?

Yes they are. My advice: cancel it, cut it up into little pieces, drop it into a cup of gasoline and drop a match in after it. Don't look back.

Get a good checking acount, a debit card and save your money.

I check out MBNA, as several others have said. I got one for college students. Good stuff. Haven't had a single problem or anything with them or anything related to the card in the year-and-a-half that I've had it.

I will need to start establishing credit eventually. :)

Im 21 and I finally have a full time job, so i thought now would be as good of a time as any. Im not getting the card so i can get myself in debt (haha, kind of ironic). I want to start building credit because all my my current credit cards are in my dads name with only my name on the card, not the account.

Talk to me after you've been declined then I'll recommend which cc to get. It's backwards thinking but it works, otherwise people never ever listen.

This is your very first credit of any type, right?

Which bank(s) do you bank with?

First credit card in my name, yes.

Bank of America. I have an overdraft visa with them, but i think its linked to my dads account as well.

My whole purpose of this is just to begin establishing credit for myself, and the reason i mentioned Amex Blue above was the 90-day return policy is something i could use.

Actually why not apply for an Amex Blue with your father as the primary applicant and you as a co-signer? That way your chances of being approved increase 100 fold and, you get the benefits of being an Amex Blue holder and you're establishing your credit all at the same time.

What exactly are the real benefits of Amex Blue? It looks just like Amex just has a normal card to me instead of one that expects you to pay it off in full.

Which cards offer the one-time CC number for safe online purchases?

IMHO the Amex Blue card is a gimmick, it was worth it when it had BVG (price matching) but now it sucks.

CitiBank and MBNA also offer one time cc numbers.

Credit Card Hot Deals

Again IMHO the best cc to get is:
A VISA or MasterCard, they're more widely accepted than Amex and Discover are.
No annual fee.
Low APR anything under 11%, besides if you pay it off in full every month who really cares about APR?
PERKS PERKS PERKS which you'll find here.

Personally my favorite credit card is the CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select, no annual fee, low APR, 1% cash rebate with no weird tier pricing.

Curious. I have the AT&T Universal card which is owned by Citi and it doesn't have a one-time use number option. It's why I'm looking for a new card after someone at Newegg stole my CC number.

Nope, I have to use this site, and they really don't offer the one-time CC number. I even called their customer service and asked.
