Processor: Amd 64 3500
Hard Drive: 120gb Hitachi
Video Card: Saphire Radeon x600 pro 256mb pci express
Power Supply: Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480W
Optical Drive: Sony 16X DVD+R / Double Layer/DVD+RW Drive
Memory: Mushkin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200
Case: Thermaltake SViking
Motherboard: The last part I need, don't know if I should go with the gigabyte or chaintech nforce4 ultra, will they be moderately the same price?

Your opinions and suggestions would help out as this is my first computer I'm building. Is my video card suffice? I didn't feel that i needed to go crazy with it. Thanks

cant tell you about the v-card, not too familiar with the new ati line, but in the nvidia realm Id say 6600GT or higher would be quite nice
Id say consider a different powersupply, antec or enermax, they may be more expensive but there is a reason for that
in the motherboard section, Id say neither, but if you have to choose one of these two chose the gigabyte
the motherboard is the most important part in the computer, dont be affraid to sped a bit more on it
havent built an amd in a while, but I say go with asus, its hard to miss with them

Perhaps you should let us know what you will be doing with the computer.

If all you plan to do is surf the net and burn some DVDs that system is overkill.

Don't tell him to get a better card, he will get the one that fits his budget. It's all to easy to say "hey get a x800 Platinum, 'cause the x800xt aint that good" well that's easy to say when it is not your money to spend. If that were the case I would say call falcon-nw or voodoo pc and forget building your own.

Personaly I would go with the Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI or if that is too much $ i would recomend Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP or ASUS A8V Deluxe.
The other thing I would ditch is that sub-par Power Supply Unit (PSU) in favor of PC Power and Cooling Turbo Cool 510 SLI. Thermaltake does not make a PSU very well. Also look in to crucial ballistix they perform better than mushkin and offer better compatabilty with various motherboards. Also Hitachi is a fine choice for a Hard Drive make sure it is the model with an 8mb cache, since they offer two differant 120gb 7k250 models the other haveing a performance hurting 2mb. All else looks great.

Crucial makes their own ram chips unlike mushkin, corsair, kingston, and ocz. Many of those companies buy chips from micron (aka Crucial) and attach them to their own circut board.

Crucial is the name of the store run by micron technology. http://micron.com/

Thanks for the input everybody, I suppose I should have mentioned what I will be doing with the system. I want to build a descent gaming rig knowing that I will be upgrading parts in the future, ex. video card. I see the nforce4x is $150 does anyone know how much the ultra costs? And what exactly are the main differences between the 4x and ultra?

I haven't really done any research on the new ati chipset, I will have to start on that. Is the new ati chipset comparable to that of nforce4?

You're spending all your money in the wrong places. You'll notice a much greater difference if you went with a 3200 instead of a 3500 save yourslef some money and invest in a better graphics card.

No. The X600 is the same thing as a 9600 with a different interface, whereas a 6600GT would perform better than the 9800XT in most situations.
