Hello,

I wanted to introduce myself to the Anandtech forums now that I am awaiting my final components for the first computer that I have ever built. I was learned about Anandtech from my buddy, Vertiggo, who has been advising me on my computer. I've been reading the articles here and trolling the boards to answer questions that I've had so I could avoid bugging him too much.

In anycase, I am just waiting for my mouse, video cards, windows, and oblivion to get here from the mail, and then I'll be kicking about. Here's what I got:

Antec P-180
Seasonic S12-600
DFI Lan Party UT Nf4 Ultra-D
AMD Opteron 170
Scythe Ninja
GSkill 2X1GB DDR 400 2-3-2-5
Digital 400G|WD 7k
BenQ|DW 1655
Creative X-Fi Extreme Music
2X XFX 7900GT (470 MHz)
Dell 2005FPW 20.1
Saitek Eclipse Keyboard
Razer Plasma Diamondback Mouse

There it is. I think she's pretty goodlooking. Hopefully she'll perform well too. Any thoughts?

I would get the G.skill ddr500. Thats the samsung uccc chips that you want to oc with an opty. I prefer a logitech g5 or g7 over the razor because I feel that the razor places your fingers too flat over the mouse.

As for the memory, I was working on a budget (a fairly sizeable one, but still a budget) and so I figured this was a good place to save a bit while still getting decent preformance. I've never oc'ed before, so I'll be learning on this rig.

On the mouse, I haven't tried the Razer yet, but I have read good things, and I wanted to try something new from the logitech which I already use.

I should get some pics up in a day or two.

Oh yeah, what are some recomended oc'ing apps for a beginer like me?

thanks for the feedback so far

No. However it was a real bitch to attach to the mounting bracket. It wasn't too fun for me to attach since I like to handle my parts delicately, and I really had to muscle it on there. As soon as I get my video cards I'm going to take it off, and redo my ac5. Also, I didn't even know what a stepping was until the day before yesterday, so I'm going to check on that too. More pics will be coming soon.

Thanks for all of the encouragement,

dan

Heh, i always wonder why people get the Ninja with a DFI board. I'd have gone with a SI 120 instead of the ninja, but that's just niggling over details.

How does the cable length look, i've got an A8N32 and a S12 and the cables are so stretched i don't think i can ever go SLI without getting extensions.

Bobthelost:

Just having eyeballed it so far, I don't expect any problems. The only downside with my wiring is that there is so much, and the spot in my p180 where the wires come out of the bottom compartment into the main is going to make it really tricky to fit my sound card in that bottom PCI slot under the SLI. I'll figure it out somehow, though.

Oh Boy!

Well, yesterday I was ecstatic to find that my box from newegg with 2x 7900gt's and Oblivion had arrived. I got to work. First I redid my CPU HS mounting as I was not happy with the AS5 application I had originally. Then I opened up the twins and began to get them installed. It wasn't long before I realized that my motherboard suspicially didn't have an SLI bridge included...

Well, not long after that (using an SLI bridge my buddy wasn't) I found that I got no video output with both cards installed. While I fiddled around, my aforementioned friend hopped online to investigate. We discovered that the DFI LanParty nF4 Ultra-D was NOT infact SLI supportive, despite the fact that they lead you to believe that it is. Undaunted, I uncovered my nF4 chipset and had at the epoxy covering the leads I needed to connect in order to hard mod my board to support SLI with a knife. Having exposed them, I realized that I have no conductive paint pen and I was a little skeptical using solely graphite for the connection. So I hopped on down to my friends room and asked his opinion. We decided to solder it. Well the soldering iron he has is rather clumsy and putting melted metal onto a card was kindof scary so we compromised. First I penciled it in, then took a tink piece of solidified and flattened soldering element and taped (yes, with a tiny bit of scotch tape) is down.

By god if it didn't work. (It did) Then I had a bit of messing with the BIOS and nVIDIA toolset to get them both recognized and running in SLI, but I managed. I'm still rather peeved with DFI for that shiestyness though. And yes, I am typing this on my operational computer, RIGHT NOW. Alright!

So, now I have to get some benching and stability testing done. Not to mention getting some battlefield2 in. But hey, in the mean time here's a few pics:

I'll update again when I have more to tell.

Dude, your rifle range redness is only enhanced by camera flash. Wow.

Oh yeah, does anyone know where to get an extra SLI bridge for the Ultra-D [SLI], because I'm going to need mine back someday

They aren't really being shitesy. They say it supports DXG, which means two graphics cards, but they probably presume that as they clearly offer specific SLI models, people figure the Ultra-D doesn't support SLI out of the box.

Either way, nice rig! :)

I'm not sure how you didn't know the Ultra-D doesn't support SLI, but good to hear you got it working in SLI anyway :p

Nice rig.
