I've had my computer for about 4 years now, and i've decided its time for a new one. I was thinking about buying a new computer, but i heard that building your own is cheaper. Below is a list of parts that im going to buy for the build, and i need some help from the experts out there to give me some tips, and whether or whether not the parts are compatible and things of that sort. The main purpose of my new computer will be for gaming. For those who help, thanks.

Awesome build. You have an all-around great processor in the Northwood, and a great GPU to offset the Intel gaming woes.

Best "Rig" I've seen EVER! at anandtech.

What are you going to use this computer for?

If you'll be gaming a lot I'd recommend an AMD platform. (intel has gaming woes indeed)

Although intel has it's strengths, a better performing gaming rig can be had for considerably cheaper than what you have listed.

What you will be using your computer for is important in this decision, however.

Welcome to AT Palvarez9504

fatty4ksu delights in posting what could nicely be described as BS (his above post is nowhere close to as bad as some, but it's still unhelpful)

For gaming, the Athlon 64 is clearly the better choice currently.

I'd recommend an A64 Venice 3200+ or 3000+ with an nForce 4 motherboard.
For RAM, i'd get 2x512 MB of OCZ or Corsair Value RAM.

Forgive me for speaking out of turn, but yes. If it supports 1 GB then it also supports 512, 256, 128, or whatever else you put in it (up to 4 GB total memory). As long as you're using DDR memory you're fine.

Yes, you can use just 512 MB.

If you'd like to utilize dual channel, you will need to use matching RAM dimms though, so it's generally best to just get a 2x512 MB pair, especially since RAM is so cheap these days :)

I'm off to bed, but there are a lot of other people here who can answer any other questions you have much better than i even can.

Good luck with the build.

One thing i was looking at was the differance in operating frequncies between the ibtel processors and the amd64. For example, an intel running at 3.0 ghz would cost the same as an amd64 running at 2.4ghz. could you clarify the differance for me, thanks.

Latest AT single core CPU review.

Read above review for some gaming comparisons ^^^

GHz (clockspeed) is only a small part of performance.

AMD Athlon CPUs perform more IPCs (Instructions per Clock) than an Intel P4 does.

Basically, with each MHz, A64s do more work than the P4s do, so although P4s run at a higher speed, they aren't doing as much with that speed.

You could say the AMD CPU is more efficient with it's speed i guess.

hth.

ok, linky?

Anyways, AMD are definately superior in gaming. A 3000+ venice and a nForce4 Ultra Motherboard paired with some value RAM would probably destroy that Intel in gaming and be quite a bit cheaper.

Shocking!
A $615 CPU better than a $145 CPU? I never woulda guessed

Dothan, keep trolling so i can make up a nice list of your crap for the mods to determine whether or not you deserve to stay here any longer.

Don't mistake this for Intel hatred...Intel makes some great CPUs (Penitum-M for example :))
The Prescott P4 are certainly not among the greats though unless you are only doing heavy duty mulitasking, & for that you should be waiting for dual-core. The OP wanted a good budget gaming machine.
We have recommend the best he can buy for his money, so keep your Prescott-2 660 to yourself...oh, & seriously, what exactly is a Prescott-2?

Why's Dothan still not banned? False advices and information is the worst sin there is second to murder.

Anyway we need to know your budget
I recommend AMD Athlon 64 Venice 3000+ or 3200+ depending on your budget.
2*512MB Value RAM at around $80-100 price range
ATi X800XL graphic card at $270 range
