Hi,

so after all the excellent advice and guidance from my first post, here's what i've decided to go with(almost). Please give your thoughts about it.

The new machine be use mostly for home video editing(SD and AVHCD HD), some movies(e.g. netflix). The HDDs and optical drives will come from my old system.

CASE + CPU : Rosewill Challenger Black + AMD Phenom 555 BE OR CM 690 II case or Antec NSK4482B with 380W

Mobo: Biostar A880G+ OR Asrock 870 mobo

RAM : G.Skill 4GB 1333 DDR3

PSU: Antec 430W Green OR what? (XFX, Corsair, Seasonic SS 650HT, others?)

Questions:

1. is this system overkill for what i need? especially the RAM? should I go to 1066 or 800 DDR3?

2. Will the PSU(especially the Antec 380W) be sufficient if i'm able to unlock the 2 cores, and OC a little bit? how about if a new video card is added e.g. GT 220? Also, do these PSU come with some voltage spike protection( I may move to asia next year)?

3. is the Coolermaster case above vastly better than the Rosewill? I am like the latter because its smaller(3" shorter in height)

I will appreciate a quick response, at least about the case, the Antec 4482B has a $10 off promo ending tomorrow.

Thanks!

I'd definitely go with an Antec 300 with the 430W for your case, or your listing of the combo Rosewill with the 955.

Definitely go for the ASRock over the Biostar. of course I hope you have a GPU in mind because the 880G Biostar has onboard Graphics while the ASRock 870 will not.

The ASRock motherboard seem drastically overpriced, though I would still prefer it over the Biostar.

Here are some of my recommendations

MSI 870 - $89.99

Gigabyte 870 - $93.99

ASUS 880G (for onboard video) - $99.99 + $2.99 S&H

If you want a small case with good airflow, consider one of these. ( hit the "Compare" button on the link) I have a Noctua NH-U12P and it fits. The GPU can't be much longer than 9" though.

Hi Davidh373:
I am so embarrassed now...did not even realise that the AsRock did not have video outputs, I guess I thought all mobo's always ship with at least a vga output :( thanks for pointing this out.

I notice that some of your mobo recommendations also don't have a video out. is it just better to get a separate video card(is that the same as GPU)?

Mosox : thanks for your recommendation also, i'm wondering if its too much for my needs, that mobo seems to be really focused towards gaming. How do you think?

Blain, thanks for the PSU recommendation. Why do you call the others 'also-ran'? do these new ones have special features? not questioning your recommendations, just trying to learn.

FishAK: I really want to see your link, but when it is clicked, there is a screen that says 'You must first select the items you want to compare'. Can you give me the names of the items?

thanks, everyone!

Ya, I can't make that link work.

The two small cases with 120mm fan mounts front and back are:

Rosewill R101-P-BK for $30 + $10 shipping

Silverstone TJ08 for $100 + $13 shipping

These cases are small enough to qualify as Cary-on baggage on an airline.

Hi all,

sorry, just not getting time these past few days to complete this purchase! I think I am set on all components, except video. For my heaviest video need, viz editing HD video(in AVHCD format), will you suggest to get a separate video card(GPU?) or will the on-board video be good enough , for e.g. this one that DavidH373 suggested above:

thanks!

THE CPU does the job, onboard video is good. Why not he Gigabyte in combo with the CPU?
