My first build -- i7

So this is my technically my 2nd build, but for my first one I just told my friend what i wanted to do with it, and he just ordered the parts and showed me how to put it together. But now, this is all me. I've been trying to do as much research as I can recently and trying to learn what to look for in certain parts. Here's a list of what i want to get, any suggestions would be very helpful. Btw, im a gamer and am looking forward to the SC2 release as well as the D3 release, I currently spend most of my gaming experience playing WoW, but I also enjoy other games like TF2, and CS:Source and the CoD games.

i7 930 processor - $200

ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel
Motherboard - $240

Corsair TR3X6G1600C7D Dominator 6 GB PC3-12800 1600 MHz 240-pin RAM - $220

Zalman CNPS9900LED Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler - $55

Thermaltake W0319RU 850W ATX 12V 2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - $95

Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD3000HLFS
- $178

Haven't found a Video card for a price I like yet, but any suggestions to something better for less money is nice or maybe any part known part compatibility issues would be very helpful.

Current Total: $988
Budget: $1000 (+/- $200)

Thanks! 😀

Seems you have almost used up your budget but no gpu yet.

What about going p55 instead of x58?

CPU: i5 750
RAM: 4 Gb -> saves you quite a bit compared to 6 gb and is enough

Do you want to run multi-gpu? If not a 850 W PSU is overkill. 500 - 600 would be fine.

I would get a standard 7200 rpm hdd over a raptor. Cheaper and/or more space. I space is a none issue i would go with the intel-V 40 GB ssd + any cheap 500 gb HDD. Will be about the same price, but system will feel much snappier.

My 2¢...
Stick with memory that adheres to the JDEC DDR3 voltage standard of 1.5v.
The one exception would be the "low voltage" product lines that offer sub-1.5v ratings.

As per previous reply, personally i would stick with Memory as well. System in general looking quite good.
I just got mine 55 and i can't complain about it.

OK, so you're wasting quite a bit of money in unnecessary places. First, you seems to like near a Microcenter, so a 930 is nor a terrible choice.

Things I would change:

  • Swap the mobo for the ASRock Extreme 3 (same thing minus the ASUS tax) -$50
  • Memory is insane, ridiculous overkill, swap for this G.Skill kit. -$70
  • Ditto on the PSU, 850W is overkill and Thermaltake's quality is a little suspect. Swap for the Corsair 650TX -$5
  • Now that SSDs are around and fast 7200RPM drives are affordable, Raptors aren't worth it. Swap for 1TB Samsung F3 -$100
OK, so that's $225 saved without really altering performance at all. Use that for a 5770 which should be plenty for Blizzard games and less-demanding shooters (CS and CoD). A 5770 should run you about $150, leaving $75 left over.

If you want to get spend a little more of your (+/- $200), take a look at the Intel X25-M 80GB at $215.

Thanks for the input guys, im really appreciating the help, the current RAM i have chosen has the quickest timings ive seen for any set of RAM that runs at 1600mhz -- and I've heard that timings are important(which is why i chose it), and i saw good reviews so I thought I'd nab it 😛, but I'll definitely keep it in mind. These budget saving ideas are really helpful.

Timings provide a very minuscule performance improvement. You won't notice unless you run benchmarks all day. In a $1000 build $70 can be spent far more effectively.

If you decide on P55, microcenter has the 875K for ~200$. It's actually a better processor overall than the 930 (higher base speed, much higher turbo, lower TDP, unlocked).

You'd also be able to move to 4GB of ram and a P55 mobo, which saves a bit of money from an X58 build.

What does this mean exactly?

It means that specific set of RAM requires 1.65 volts. The standard is 1.5, and as such, kits that require more are harder on the i7's integrated memory controller. More volts also mean more heat, energy, and less overclocking headroom.

Go with the G.skill kit listed in the 4th response.

How much did that case cost, including materials, to build? Its freakin beautiful

Also what material is that and where did you get it? I MUST KNOW
