Specs:

e4300
P6n-sli-platinum
Corsair Value selectRAM 1GB DDR2-667

This is my first attempt to overclock, im a total noob when it comes to overclocking ,disabled HPET, CPUID and other feature that i dont remember in the BIOS. Then i selected linked mode(there are 3 modes in it) in the BIOS and raised FSB to 281.2 , the problem is that most of the time cpu-z is showing multiplier at 6x! though it tends to change 9x often. All other programs including windows ,Sandra lite is showing speed at 2.53Ghz only CPU-Z is reporting 1.6GHz

Also about checking stability, for how much time i should run Orthos ? should i run memtest too or orthos memory test would do the job ?

Now about temps i ran orthos for 20 minutes , on full load the temps on SpeedFan is 57C while idle load tends to be mid 30Cs

Thanks in advance!

I overclocked with a normal p6n-sli recently. If the bioses are the same, then you have a secret setting in the cpu settings menu (not the overclocking menu). Hit F4 while in the cpu settings menu and it will bring up another option. forgot what it's called, but if that is turned on, your ratio will jump between 6 and 9 depending on how much the processor is being used. Be sure to turn it off for better stability.

For stability, I've been going with just orthos recently. Run a cpu test and a blend test for at least a few hours (overnight if you'd like). Orthos blend test will typically find an error in memory before memtest will, though that's just my experience.

Good luck to you, and shoot for 2.7-3ghz! :)

i ran orthos for few hours and the full load temps shoot at 63C !!!! Is this right ?

I am using BIOS v1.2 but i can't find any secret option there !!!

The reason the multi is changing between 6x and 9x, is because of the power-saving options, either C1E or Enhanced Intel Speedstep. Both of those options should be disabled when overclocking.
As far as temps go, Orthos Small FFT generates the highest temp for me, around 69C on my 2.8Ghz E4400 @ 1.28v. You shouldn't be worried about 63C at load, that's pretty normal.
Running Memtest is a good idea, once you test for stability using Orthos. I generally use Large FFTs, although Small FFTs could be an option too.
Test using Orthos for 24hours for best results. Likewise, Memtest86+ for 24hours too. Orthos blend is good for testing memory, but the problem with it is that it doesn't test all the memory in the system. Memtest86+ OTOH does.

Another set of data for you:

E4300 with Abit IP35-E and Big Typhoon. 3.44GHz (382 x 9) with 1.465Vcore in BIOS. Memory at 477MHz (5-4-4-12-2T...1.95Vdimm). Room temp 84F.

Orthos:
-Speedfan = 67C
-RMClock = 65C
-S&M/TAT = 82C

Idle:
-25 to 30C with Speedfan and RMClock
-S&M/TAT = 40C
