My first attempt for setting up wireless network

I am going to set up a network in a house with 3 pc's. Two of them connected to each other
with a switch (Planet 10/100 8port). The switch will be connected to an access point (D-Link DWL-900AP+)
with an ethernet cable and finally the access point will communicate with the third pc with a wireless PCI
adapter (D-Link DWL 520+). I am looking for a step by step guide that will help me to configure the network.
Two quick questions:
The SSID name must be the same as the workgroup name?
Which type of encryption is better? ASCII or Hexademical?

No a WLAN SSID has nothing to do with a Windows workgroup name. You'll still set that workgroup name up on that PC.
Doesn't matter, whatever is easier for you. You should be using WPA instead of WEP anyway so that wouldn't be part of the equation, although I suppose you could convert a WPA passphrase into hex.

Umm, do you have something doing your DHCP? Not sure s switch wil be best for you. WHy not just get a wireless router and then you don't need two devices...

The equipment is not mine so i can't buyany extras. I will be using XP Home. You think that it will be more difficult to set up than using XP Pro? Is it better to use static ip, or choose to automatically assign ip address?

The AP is prob. doing DHCP by default. leave it.. now plug your switch into one of the lan ports on the access point.

release and renew all ip's on the PC's and you should be good to go.

get your network up before you introduce WEP

the SID basically just the name of your wireless network that your wireless devices see. Leaving it default would be ok.

In order to set up the access point, do i have to do this from the pc with the wireless card or ftom one of the 2 pc's that are connected to the switch?WEP.

out of the box any of your pc's should be about to access your AP via it's LAN IP address; wireless or wired.

In terms of getting your PC connected to the Wireless Network, their should be no difference in setting up between XP HOME and XP PRO.

Are you sure of the model number for the AP? DLink's site doesn't list a DWL-900AP as a product. If the AP can do DHCP and has LAn jacks on it (so it's really a router) then that should be the first thing it hits after coming in. Then from there you would connect up the other computers and hubs or switches or whatever.
