edit: i've got a quick question about oc'ing at the end of the thread if anyone cares to lend a hand to a noob :)

Just installed my Athlon XP 1800 (retail). Upgraded from a Tbird 1.1ghz. Paired with a MSI K7T Turbo2 and PNY 512 pc133 (samsung).I've got bios revision 3.5 and it detects unknown CPU at 1533mhz. You think it's worth a bios flash just to get it to say Athlon XP at POST?

Also, bios tells me the vcore is running at 1.55 instead of the 1.60 the stepping info says it should be at...is there any potential in this (for OC)? I've read the websites about reading into the stepping codes...and if that were totally true, my cpu would be a 2700+....regardless of that, if I want to start OC'ing, should I wait awhile for the processor to 'burn in' before i up the fsb?

:)

Not too sure about the BIOS revision but do upgrade to the latest. It should be able to detect the new cpu. :)

I wouldn't play too much with the BIOS on this board, since I tried to change the BIOS on my K7T Turbo ver3 and I managed to kill the board (well, flash didn't succed).

Regarding overclocking - just do it. BTW 1533 MHz is default speed for 1800+.

i appreciate the reply, but i'm pretty lost....since victor freeze III is my computer and i am duuuma....lol :) and yeah, I know 1533mhz is the default speed, but my little quirk was bios would say 'unknown cpu @ 1533mhz.'

Anyway I followed pillage's advice and just flashed. NTFS requires a WinME or Win98 boot disk that contains RAMDRIVE. After the utility creates the virtual storage, you can store the new bios file in RAMDRIVE and run awflash from there. My update was a breeze after I made the proper boot disk.

now wth version 3.6 bios it says 'AMD Athlon XP 1800+'
I'm happy now. :)

edit//**oh sorry i thought u was worry bout the speed differ. heh**

oh yeah how about the other part of my question...anyone know what's the deal with my 1.55 vcore and how long I should wait until I start oc'ing?

with the vcore don't worry.... some boards undervolt .... weird word... but that should be no problem...

in terms of burn in... dunno... some people say it works.. other say it's crap....

up to you as to when you want to start o/cing

if you do a search for "burn-in" you should find a couple of threads in this forum

You probably have a TBred CPU.. and my guess is it won't work in that older mobo.
I have a KT266A board I can't even put an XP1700 (TBred) in. I have to keep a Palomino or less.. how weak is that!!!???

I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to OC'ing....how high should I adjust the FSB when I want to OC this thing? I'm not sure what the process is here....I had an Epox board that let me go up to 115 on my 1.1tbird (@1.265) but on this MSI board, my fsb is adjustable up to 200 (i think?).

I tried oc'ing my 1.1tbird to 1463 (11 x 133) but it wouldn't even boot when I did that and i had to reset cmos. I'm guessing I can't change the multiplier without unlocking? What FSB should I try with this Tbred and should I up the Vcore since the board is undervolting?

Nope, no problems here...i've got a Tbred 1800 with a kt133a chipset....everything's good. It's very surprising that tbred won't work in your board since it's a newer chipset. I'm sure that board was meant to support it b/c even my 133a board is meant to support tbred's (referenced the MSI website CPU support).
