Carpal Tunnel Syndrome >>
Sluggo,
I was about to say the same thing. Numbness/tingling in the fingers (especially the thumb and first two fingers) is the most obvious warning sign of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
lowfatbaconboy,
How well can you feel with the finger(s) that you feel the symptoms most in? I had a nasty battle with CTS a few years ago when I worked at a lumberyard for the summer, and I lost all feeling in my thumb and first two fingers (and a little feeling in my ring finger). At its worst, I was able to stab a pin into my pointer finger without feeling it. Sound familiar? Get yourself checked out, or at the very least, take some precautions to prevent nerve damage.
Get yourself an MS Natural Keyboard (or one of the clones) if computer use is the leading cause of your symptoms. Pick up one of those mousepads with the gel pad to rest your wrist on, too. As
Sluggo already stated, take an anti-inflammatory--600mg of ibuprofin (Advil) is what was prescribed for me.
CTS can be quite painful (and in extreme cases, debilitating), but it is also quite treatable. From your basic description, it sounds like that might be what's causing your numbness. You might want to purchase two cheapo wrist braces to wear at night (one of the worst times for those who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrom; 'incorrect' positioning of the hands while sleeping worsens the condition, and the pain seems to be at its worst at night since there are no other distractions).
In my case at least, the wrist braces, combined with ibuprofin (and finding a new job

), did wonders. I wore the braces for a month non-stop until the pain decreased, and then only wore them at night. I lost so much dexterity in my fingers (I used to paint model cars and planes with a single-hair brush, but with CTS I was unable to brush my teeth one-handed), but all of it came back since I caught it and began treatment so early.
If carpal tunnel syndrome is your problem, don't mess around with it. Treat it early, even if you only do it on your own, and you'll drastically reduce your chances of permanent nerve damage. You might also want to check out your "workspace" (the computer

) and see if you can re-position things to reduce the stress on your wrists.
Hope this helps...
