My feeble attempt to network my home..

it blows. I ran cables outside my house (drill a hole, run it along the vinyl siding...) to get to my basement.

I want to get the wiring redone at some point, with a full rack in my basement in a closet or something... how much do you figure it will cost for an electrician to come and do my whole house? We are talking one jack per room (almost every room), with say.... 14 jacks on 3 floors.

I just want a ballpark so I know how much to set aside monthly to pay for it all. I want to upgrade to Cat6 cable and gigabit ethernet in my house, so hopefully that can happen by the end of the summer.

Thanks for any info!

All I know is an electrician here said that adding a network port would be $120. I assume the price would be lowered per outlet if you bought a lot at a time.

Every new house should be designed to have outlets in every room! That's the kind of house I dream of living in! Gigabit network and cable TV in every room!

I have a wireless network in my home... it works fine and I have two access points so the signal is clean and clear throughout.

However... I want my home to have a proper network. I have 7 PCs in the house and a laptop or two floating around, and I want them to be hard wired into my home. This is what I want, even if the suggestion to go wireless is easier.

So instead of suggesting wireless... as if I hadn't thought of that already -- tell me how to get some pricing done :)

Seems with wireless being what it is, there's no point to wiring the whole home for ethernet anymore.

gigabit >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wireless.....

until 802.11n comes out, and is GOOD and done, gigabit will always be better, but yeah for just plane jane int4rw3b wifi is fine.... $120 per jack sounds about right, its rape if you ask me, but thats about what i charge people when i do it :) i'd never pay anyone for it, but i guess thats just me.

But I'm hearing:
I have a washing machine in my home. It works fine and gets my clothes cleaned quickly and efficiently.

However...I want my home to have a proper river with a washing stone. I have 5 people living in my house and I want their clothes to be spotless and hand-cleaned. This is what I want, even if the suggestion to use the washing machine is easier.

What value do you expect to gain from the time and expense of wiring your entire house over just getting a few good WiFi APs?

id rather have gigabit ethernet than wireless too....granted for the internet it won't make a difference, but the intranet will be much faster for transferring files, etc...don't have to worry about signal quality. When I move into my house, that's one of the first things I'm doing. I'm going to do it myself though, it's really not that hard...just get up in your attic and drop lines between the walls.

Call me old fashioned and security paranoid but I still prefer wired ethernet over wireless.

If I were building a new home or remodeling I would install ethernet jacks in every room.

Wireless is far more convenient and cost effective (vs the hardware costs of wiring for ethernet).

For instance, the Microsoft MN-700 802.11g wireless router can be had for $39 out the door with no rebates.

yeah, because that is exactly the same thing
the man wants gigabit ethernet in his house...obviously he has considered wireless, but wants gigabit instead (which I also agree with)....so either answer his question, or bring something new to the thread. you aren't the first to suggest the wireless idea.

My feeble attempt to network my home..

Has anyone mentioned you could go wieless?

Hell, I was using wireless in 00' & it really sucked, anyone remember Intel Anypoint?

I just started upgrading to 802.11g (router & 2 of 4 cards) & an really happy with it.
