He uses phonom, but I'm reading about them and it's not looking good.

Thats what we do if the connection is down it forwards to my girlfriends cellphone.

Except for certain business plans, yes. Even then you technically have a phone line, you just can't make any calls on it.

So? No matter what communication system you use, you're going to be screwed if the network it uses goes down. POTS/cellular/satellite... any of them could stop working without warning.
