I got my x800 yesterday and did some very quick benchmarks using the Benchemall program. The 9700Pro benches were taken a couple days ago using Omega 4.3 drivers. The x800Pro benches were done using the drivers that came on the CD. I did not check their version number. I'm using Windows XP Pro/SP1 and DX9.0b. I have not really done any tweaking to my system and I never shutdown background tasks when I play games. As a result programs like NAV and Internet Security are running in the background. I do use cacheman to make sure I have as much free memory as possible, typically around 770-780mb. Also my system is not overclocked at all.

My full system specs can be viewed here:
My current system

The only item that is not correct on that listing is my Mushkin PC3500 will arrive today so these benches were taken with 1GB of Crucial PC2700.

I had been playing Far Cry with the 9700 at 800x600 resolution with many of the settings on Very High, Low AA and 1xAF. It was playable but the graphics tended to be shimmery at that resolution. Last night I played with everything at Very High, water at ultra high, 4xAF, Low AA at 1152x864 and it looked beautiful on the x800 and my framerates never dropped below mid 40's. I used Fraps to check in-game framerate.

I'm assuming that the PC2700 is creating a bottleneck at the CPU and that's why there is such a small spread between 640x480 and 1600x1200 on the x800. I'll bench again after I install the faster memory.

You went from around 12 FPS to 56 FPS in Far Cry @ 1280x1024? Um, holy freaking crap! :Q

I run 1152x864 also - desktop and games.

Thanks for the benchmarks and good luck with the new memory.

That's pretty sweet, it looks like you're cpu limited until 16x12 there with the x800pro on a 3400+ no less! Hopefully some full speed ram will help there :).

I know what you mean with the 9700 Pro, with my 9800 Pro it runs ok most of the time but every few minutes there's some major slow-down even with medium settings.

Now oc that bitch and see what she can do :).

Get better ram. ~3500+ and oc that ram and cpu. W/ higher ram ull get more data to ur cpu faster to crunch and potentially improve framerates. Overall, games are less ram bottlenecked then say, video encoding due to them using many more loops and having that data already cached in the cpu. U have a meg of cache also, so theres a higher chance that its your cpu then the ram, but a ram upgrade will prob improve some frames anyways.

The "Utlra High" setting with the water effects are a real killer. With my 9800Pro system, the difference between Ultra High and VERY HIGH can be as much as a 15% dip in performance. Visually speaking, I really don't see that much of a difference between the two.

Thanks for the benchmarks, fritzdog. It's pretty amazing how you went from totally GPU-limited to almost totally CPU-limited--and on just about the highest-end CPU out there, no less.

Somehow, I have a feeling that the difference with faster memory will be quite small, since the Athlon 64 uses has a built in memory controller.

Good stuff. Makes sure you update the benches once you get new memory. It seems like my P4 2.6@3.2 with 8500 could benefit GREATLY from an X800Pro.

Did you expect it to be slower with a card 2 generations newer? ;)

If the X800 Pro has only 12 pipelines enabled, how much faster do you think the X800XT PE will be with 16 pipes enabled?

Can you now run those X800 benches with the new Catalyst 4.5's? It would be interesting to see if there's a performance increase.

Thanks,

I pre ordered an X800XT Platinum Edition. I wanted to get my benchmarks with my 9800XT and the 4.5 Catalyst Drivers using the same benchmark standards as FritzDog, except I have the sucker clocked to the max. Pentium 2.8C @ 3.5Mhz W/Hyperthreading enabled. 2GB of Kinston DDR500 clocked at 1:1 @ 1000FSB, 9800XT overdrive enabled (not much of an overclock), PC Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe. ASUS P4C800E Deluxe.

Benchmark session result

Curly, is that with details on max? And Fritzdog, did you download the 4.5 drivers yet?

Thanks for the benchmarks guys. You went above and beyond spending so much money so we could see first glance on a home rig.

Thanks MemeberSince97. Some people spend thousands pimping thier ride, I spend mine on my computer.

Regs,

Yes this is on max settings. It is listed just above the first Far Cry benchmarks. I thought I might have missed it because I only cut and pasted the results from BTA.

Please note, my benchmarks are with the Radeon 9800XT. I hope to double the benchmarks as promised by ATI and Nvidia. I plan to keep the X800XT Platinum Edition when I get it and a Digital Video Editing Company will buy the Nvidia 6800Ultra due to the real time encoding.

I will post benchmarks as soon as I recieve either card.

Yeah, I can't imagine a x800p in that reg. 3.5GHz P4. And I also can't imagine when OS/Drivers for 64 bit come out.

Yeah, I am also running an A64 3200+ but I am not satisfied with the motherboard support yet. I know NVIDIA just came out with Nforce 3 250, and VIA's K8T800 looks promising with the AGP/PCI V-Link Locking capability for overclocking.

When FarCry's 64Bit version of the game comes out, I will benchmark with A64.

Far Cry I think is all ready 64 bit capable. You just need a non beta OS with non beta drivers.

PC3200 will provide 5%-10% gain while PC3500 will make no difference over PC3200.
