my eyes don't seem to produce as much moisture as they should be. there was a point in college when i would wear my contacts for a ridiculous amount of time, without taking them off at night (like months). yes, i know that was stupid and i'm much better at taking them off at night now. but when i first wake in the morning, it takes like 2-3 yawns to get tears to come out. i'm guessing that's not normal.

does anyone else have really dry eyes like this? any way to get the moisture production back to "normal"? should i forgo contacts for a long time? eyedrops help, but is that just a temporary solution? i currently don't have a comfortable or updated pair of glasses, but i'm thinking i should get a new set.....as i get older, i really don't want to do any long term damage to my eyes.

My eyes have dried a bit over the years so I'll wear glasses for a day once in a while and often for the whole evening at home. This seems to have made contact lenses comfortably wearable again, whereas when I left them in all day (though I almost never fell asleep with them in) it wasn't so comfortable.

that's how i am now. i'll take off my contact and put my old glasses on when i'm at home at night, and not going out. it has helped my eyes feel less "fatigued" but i still worry a bit about my eyes being so dry. and yes, i'll most likely ask an optometrist, but i thought i'd ask the collective (read: free) wisdom of AT first :)

same thing happened to me ... never took them off and if I rarely washed them with the eye solution ... now I can barely go more than 6hrs with contacts without getting a headache. These days, I only wear contacts when I play sports other than that it's glasses. :(

Everytime, there are new 'breathable' contacts in the market, I would try them out ... so far none works, but eyes are just too dry. Thinking about the going lasik route ...

You should really try Acuvue Advance or Oasys.

I used to wear Acuvue 2's, but they started to feel really bad (dry eyes, eyes feeling really tired all day).

The Acuvue Advance breathes a lot better and you can actually sleep in them (unlike regular contacts).

When I go for my next exam, I will probably try the Oasys (as long as they aren't ungodly priced).

Well, it looks like the Advance are about $140.00 and the Oasys are around $180.00 for a years supply (after various rebates).

I'm using the advance as well, still can't go longer than ~6hrs :( ... prob. going to try the oasys in a couple of weeks after I get my new prescription ...

I love the Accuvue Advance lenses, they seem to be much more comfortable than the accuvue 2's and my eyes seem to get less dry. I would recommend trying them before lasik. Nevertheless, consult your eye doctor. They can make the best recommendation for you.

I've read that the laser beam could cut through dry eyes and burn the brain pretty severely. Right now I don't have any information if the laser can get out of the back of your skull.

get acuvue oasys, take them out/put them in when you should, keep eyedrops with you and use them.

I have real advice here. I had the exact same thing happen to me. In college I wore contacts all the time (usually took them out at night). Then when I got older they were getting much drier, doc said b/c I work in air conditioning and I stare a screen during the day so I don't blink as much.

Anyway i started getting infections and constant dryness. So I went and got LASIK. I get the occassionaly dry eyes now and then, but nowhere near what it was when i wore contacts. The doc warned that if I had dry eyes before it might be drier now, but it's not. LASIK is probably one of the best things I've ever done.

do eyedrops promote more natural moisture in your eyes?

or do you become dependent on them, like chapstick?

I usually put a drop or 2 of re-wetting drops in each contact....and use the drops in the eye as they get dry during the course of the day.

I wear CIBA Night & Day's. They're awesome! 30 days without taking them out for night. :)

Of course they're like $70/box so it works out to about $280/year, but I use almost no contact solution, so I think it's worth it.
