hey Y'all :)

I just wanted to pop in a line to say that, for me, this drive is not a system hog at all. Unlike the Techextreme Review of this drive where htey got 63% CPU usage, I got well under 20%, most of the time the cpu usage was at 1-3%. If I had to guess, i'd say it was 5-6% average cpu usage burning both 12x cdrs and a 10x CDRW. Here are my system specs.

p3-975
256mb Ram
Asus P3V4x
Win2k.

As a note, DMA is a must, and the drive is super quiet.

d00dz, plextor r00lz :p

The 12/10/32 is an awesome drive. I only wish I had the money, but 8x should be enough for me. %5-6 usage is pretty good, about the level of Winamp. Although, I still don't think I would have the same number of processes open while burning that I have when I have Winamp open.

yeah, Plextor SCSI is amazing, but their IDE stuff is flat out awesome as well... I was expecting high CPU usage after seeing that review, but I didn't even get close to that cpu usage.. :).

I had winamp running the background while burning... but my usage with winamp is 2-3%. 12x isn't necessary(i had a 6x) but its nice to have.

EDIT: This drive is soooo damn quiet

My BIOS (Asus CUV4X) only detects the drive as a PIO mode 4 drive. Anyone else have that problem ? I'm gonna try to force it to UDMA 2, hopefully, that'll fix it.

63% usage probably means they don't have DMA checked for the drive under Control Panel->Device Manager->Settings.

Just got it from Onvia and tested out the 10X CDRW burning capability and I'll have to say that I'm pretty impressed. It's quicker than my internal zip drive!!!

do you actually need 10x certified cdrw's? or will 4x certified do?
and do you actually need 12x certified cdr's? or will 8x do?

i just bought my 8x/4x/32x a while ago and bought a whole bunch of cdr's... but i don't think they're 12x certified... planning on returning my 8x/4x/32x and buying the 12x/10x/32x...

one thing though... why does the 12x/10x/32x only have a 2mb buffer? the 8x/4x/32x has a 4mb buffer...

hi all,

got my 12/10/32 but am having a problem. the plextormanager2000 software causes win2k to blue screen halt at boot-up. after a few blue screens, i went back to the last known good configuration which gave me the plextor apps but not the enhanced properties. then i tried the plextor apps and they didn't work. the adaptec s/w works though, but i don't think you can use the burn-proof with them(?).

system: p3-600 (@800) on msi6309 (via133a) w/ plex as 2ndary master and toshiba 12x dvd-rom as slave to it.

any help would be appreciated,

i think the 12/10/32A only has a 2 meg buffer because supposedly the BURN-Proof thing covers for it. that's what i've been told, anyway. and it does make sense, to an extent. i dunno, if it were me i would just keep the 4 meg buffer so i wouldn't need BURN-proof unless i absolutely needed it, but whatever.

Burn-proof isn't an excuse for having a small buffer, its so that, irregardless of buffer size, any buffer drop will not cause a coaster.

Hankster,

You don't need plextor manager 2000 in order ot use burn-proof. http://www.ahead.de is where you can get nero, and pretty much any version supports Burn-Proof and thsi drive..

The only real nice program with plextor manager is Disc-DUPE, but you can get around this using CloneCD.

Good Luck,

To save money!......Larger buffers are only to prevent buffer underrun....BURN-PROOF will (hardware wise) stop the drive if it internally detects that it does not have enough data to complete the next "COMPLETE" track....

When the buffer is full enough, the drive will then continue...result..No coasters....

Combined with Nero, this should be a rock-solid way of burning without the consequenses of tying up the PC (IDE!) while doing it...

Great idea!!!

Burn-Proof is a good thing, cause even with large buffers, you'll still get buffer-underruns

Unfortunately, you do need 10x CDRW.. YOu get one piece, but i'm guessing Ricoh 10X rw media is coming out soon, since their 10x rW drive comes out this week.

As far as cdrs go, i've been burning 12x on Imation 8x's and they work fine.

is the BURN-Proof software available separately? or only with that specific drive... and will it work with my plextor 8x/4x/32x? don't know if i wanna spend an extra $80-$90CAD to upgrade to the new drive... 8x is fine for me right now.

Ohhhh... I get it..

Keenbeen,

Burn-proof is a hardware thing. It has nothing to do with software. YOu can enable burn-proofing in Nero for any drive, but it'll only work in drive's With Burn-Proof Tech. What Burn-proof does, is when a buffer is underrun, it pauses the wriitng, allowing hte buffer to reload and then it'll continue... hence, no more buffer-under caused coasters.

hehe maybe they had some sort of SETI/RC5 going?

I remember running HDTach on my new hard drive, and I was recently keeping the dnet client again(for team Anandtech of course), I just about freaked out when I saw the 89% CPU utilization, stop the client, and retest, 3-5% :)
