Well i figured what the heck i have nothing better to do today , so i decided to to take my Retail Stock Intel Heatsink that i got with my new 1.6A and try and get that sucker nice and smooth ... Well first off i got together some 600 , 1000 , and 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper , then got a small container of soapy water and began the process .... After about 45 minutes of sanding i was ready for the next step ..

With the Stock Fan only spinning up at about 2300RPM , i thought to myself i wander if i could put a higher CFM fan on there .. So i got out the trusty ol dremal and made a few cuts here and a few cuts there and in about 10 minutes i had a nice litte 60mm YS Tech fan (4300RPM) sitting atop my newly lapped heatsink ...

Ye i know you guys are like get to the point allready !!!!

Ok , Ok , Well for about one hour of work i got a WOPPING 1C decrease at full load ...

Ye i to was kinda bummed , but hey it was worth a try , Right ?

Just thought i would share one Overclockers experience with another .....

Did you use AS thermal paste? Ya know you have to let that set for a while before it works to its full potential.

Ye i used a thin layer of Artic Silver on there ... But i did not know it takes time for it to kick into effect ? Never heard that one before ...

Anyway ill list some specks of the system :

CPU: 1.6A@2.4 Ghz
Voltage: 1.63-1.65 via MBM5
Cooler: modified retail sink
Motherboard: Asus P4B266-C
FSB: 150 Mhz
Memory: 2 - 256meg OCZ PC3000
Full tower with plenty of cooling (2-120mm , 4-80mm , ect)

what kind of temps are you showing under MBM? someone on here said you have to select asus2(culs2) or whatever to get the right temp for the cpu. I also have the 266-C and under MBM I get like 4 temp readouts, asus1 reads 25C (I think this is chipset temp), asus2 reads around 29-31C (this is the one I think is the cpu), asus2(culs2) reads around 40C and asus3 reads around -1C. this are idle temps

the reason I think asus2 readout is right is asusprobe cpu temps match it except when temps hit 40 and under, asusprobe stops at 40.

I lapped my 1.6a (the heat spreader on the chip was real rough and had some scratches) and the retail hs, applied AS. my temps hover around 28-30C idle and around 45-48 under load. I ran mine at 2.4 but backed it down to 2.13 after some lockups. I think I need a better ps.

Well useing MBM5 sensor 1 reads 52C (CUSL2) at full load , it never comes down because i run United Devices 24/7 in the background , so im not sure what the idle is , sensor 2 reads 23C which is the mobo , and sensor 3 reads 39C ...

But if i want to display sensor 1 (which i use for my chip temp) i have to use ASUS 2 or ASUS 2(CULS2) it wont let me use both at the same time !!!

So im not sure which one is right ASUS 2 or ASUS2(CULS2) , ive heard other people say to use the CULS2 but who know ....

Let me know if you guys figure out what sensor your supposed to use in MBM5 ...

I haven't used the AS paste personally, but I've heard numerous people say that their temps were lower after 3-4 days of "burn-in" time. Please let us know if your temps do go down from what they originally were. The more info the better.

Chopper - any problems with USB on that board @ 150FSB? What memory settings are you using at that frequency?

Yes AS needs time to 'settle' it even says so on their website...

Well i just tried to boot into XP with my USB Gravis Gamepad and it wouldnt boot , so i disconected it and it booted up just fine , but heres the thing when in XP i plugged it back in and it shows it as OK in the control panel and working ...

So i guess the answer is yes and no ....

I dont really use any USB devices so its not a big issue with me , but for someone else it might be ...

Im useing the Normal setting in the bios , while the memory is set to 2,2,5 with 2.6v . I tried the Turbo1 setting it worked but only when i dropped the ram timing down to 3,3,6 .

Im new at this DDR stuff so im not sure which is the better performance route to go with :

Normal: 2 , 2 , 5
or
Turbo1: 3 , 3 , 6

Still tinkering , i know this chip can do more , im just not sure what the safe voltage would be to run it at , any ideas ?

has anyone poped off the heat spreader yet and placed the heatsink directly on the chip???????
Who hear has the balls?;)
and no crying if you kill the cpu:(

My 1.8A/P4B266, OC'ed to 2.3Ghz running Prime95 for a half hour:

the "Asus 1" sensor reads 27C (I call this the MoBo).

the "Asus 2" sensor reads 36C (maybe CPU?).This sensor starts out about the same temp as the MoBo sensor from a cold boot.

the "Asus 2 (CUSL2)" sensor reads 50C (I like this for the CPU, I think 50C is probably closer to accurate than 36C). This sensor starts out around 40C from a cold boot no matter what the MoBo sensor temp starts out as (the MoBo sensor can vary from about 20C to 26C at first boot of the day depending how cold it is in here).

Any thoughts?

well, with my 266-C, ive found that I cant boot with my usb explorer at ANY fsb speed over 133 (havent tried anything lower). If I pull it out and wait till the boot screen goes away and plug it back in, it works fine. but, my usb saitek joystick doesnt cause any problems with booting. weird. havent tried my gamepad pro yet.

as for the temps, I dont know which one is the right one. I know I can play MOH, wolf and il2 demo for hours without any lockups, but the TW2002 demo locks up randomly and the system reboots by itself after a few seconds. is this a feature of XP? it gives me a error report upon reboot that has something to do with my gf3 drivers. I rolled back to the 23.12 drivers from the 27.42 and it seems to have fixed the problem though so an overheated cpu was probably not the problem.

Has anyone lapped the P4 Northwood CPU itself?

I just got the gear to lap the HSF (sunflower look-alike from PCP&C),
and thot I might go after my 1.6A while I'm at it.

Any advice ?

I shouldn't think it's necessary, and the 1.6A isn't a terrible heat producer to begin with, even overclocked with retail HS/F and 1.6+Vcore.
