My email REMOVE madness?

I started out giving one of my free emails, and thought that was why there was a big old REMOVE in the middle of it.

I changed/confirmed a new email, that of my University account, which most definately is not free (I can send you my tution bill if you'd like),,,,, but REMOVE still plants its face on it. How can I remove REMOVE?
 
I've been looking around, and it seems that REMOVE is very common, even to people with long post histories.

If I may ask, what is the purpose?
