My el chepo lens's aperture will not change it make a weird sound when I try changing it to anything besides 16 its what caused my 30d to give me a Error 99

Its by far my least favorite lens but its still a lens that i use and payed for

the question is can I do anything to fix it?

Thanks

I assume other lenses are working fine, changing apertures, etc? If the lens was jarred or hit it's possible something bent or snagged internally to "stick" the aperature at f16. Other things that cause this are when oil gets on the blades , but this usually just slows them down a lot. It will only freeze up the blades if the lens has been sitting around a long time with oil or water on the blades.

I'm not familiar with the Canon mount, but on A-Mount and some other lenses you can manipulate the aperture when the camera is off lens by moving the lever by hand, etc. If the blades are just slightly stuck, this may be enough to free them up and they'll be fine. Other things that can happen are that the aperture control arm can get bent, and not align with the control on your camera causing it not to respond, or jam.

When all else fails, take it to a shop. However, most lens repairs are expensive, and would not be worth it for a lower end lens like a Quantaray... (I have the same one for the a-mount, and yah, it's cheap but generally functional)

Good luck with it...

If somebody told you this, my apologies...get a pencil eraser and clean the gold plated contacts on the lens and the body.

EF is all electronic, the only mechanical link between the lens and the camera is the bayonet mount. no levers or anything. so no go trying to manipulate the aperture yourself.

What happens when you stick the lens on the body, set an aperture like f/8, and press the DOF Preview button? Do the aperture blades move? What if you held down the DOF Preview and turn the dial at the same time to change the aperture?

My Sigma 100-300mm does this on occasion. It will get stuck with the aperture stopped down. It eventually randomly pops back to normal on its own within a couple hours and lots of mounting on and off. When it gets stuck the DOF Preview button can still make the blades move.

You can hear a motor(?) wine kinda loudly
Loud enough for me to know not to try that again

well I found out my dad knows a guy who works on canon lens's and he said he would take a look at it

I told him if something is broken not to worry about it and just open the aperture up as wide as possible

I'd really like to learn how to take apart a lens. It just seems like I get to a point where the lens just doesn't take apart any more, and I'd really like to figure out how for repair purposes and stuff. Not too sure where to learn though :(
