My ears are burning . . .

My ears are burning from the noisy Volcano 7 (not 7+) that I just installed. Sounds like a jet is idling outside my house! According to the specs, the Volcano 7 is 39 dB at 5000 RPM. I think it's more than 39 dB--those marketing bastards.

I have an Athlon XP 1800+ that I don't OC. What are the quiet HSF solutions out there? My inept research has shown the following options:

Volcano 6Cu (not 6Cu plus) rated at 31 dB
SVC GC68 with Panaflo or Nidec rated at 21 dB (how's the cooling performance?)
Buy a quiet 80 mm fan and stick it on my Volcano 7 (but will this compromise the cooling?)

All tips appreciated. Thank you!

i have the volcano 7+ (see sig) and i keep mine on low setting and i get temps in the mid 30's celcius. the noise is very minimal on low setting. another idea is to get the thermalright ax7 with an 80mm panaflo fan. that should be real quiet and cool well. hope that helps.

Hey Duke: How do you keep the fan on the low setting? I thought the fan speed was automatic depending on the temp. The box says 5000 RPM at 35 degrees. My temp is in the high 30s. Can you manually set the fan speed?

Also--sounds like you are a Duke Nukem fan--I hear the new Duke is coming out very soon! I bet you'd be first in line, eh?

I currently have a few amd rigs and have different heatsinks on all of them. My main rig (xp1800+) is currently using a thermalright sk-6 with 80mm panaflo h1a. Temps I see are usually around 50C under full load. I use the Alpha 8045 with 80mm sunon on my Athlon 1.0 at 1.3 rig. I generally see temps of 45C under full load. Finally on my XP1600+ I am using the retail heatsink and temps are usually around 48C under full load.

My roommate uses the thermalright ax-7 on his XP1700+ at 1900+ with a sunon 80mm fan. His full load temps linger around 44C.

As a point of reference all of these heatsinks were applied using Artic Silver II. I know that temps will vary depending on other rig specs and you can have a look at three of my rigs in my sig.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Minendo: What about the noise level? I know it is subjective, but which of the four setups are the noisiest and the quietest?

The quietest setup would be the thermalright sk6/panaflo setup and it is near silent. The noisest would be the alpha 8045/sunon setup which I can barely hear. At the moment it is the noisiest because there is no cover on the case. All three setups are virtually silent.
