got a dying asus 2gb 660ti have only had it 1.5 yrs but it keeps giving me the black screen o'death and a reboot so...

I play some black ops II, rust, diablo 3, and thats about it, i would be playing titanfall if it didnt suck, waste of my money...

I dont have a true budget but for what i play and hopeing i dont have to buy another card in 3 to 4 yrs what can i get for around the $250 range give or take 10%?

running a i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz w/ 16gb ram on windows7 and run a 1600x900 reso

i guess i like nVidia, but im too stupid to be making that decision lol

@CarpeDiem99 maybe but I won't. Would take twice as long as normal as I'm a truck driver and am never home, so I'm going to skip the downtime and hassle.

I'd try for warranty first.

With those games there's no reason to get a powerhouse gpu, especially in 1600x900. Maybe even contemplate a downgrade to 750Ti (one with displayport) or 260x. Those are the newest architectures.

So what if they are newer architectures? Doesn't mean those are good cards. I am frankly amazed at the amount of recommendations 750Ti garners. OK, we get it is uses little power but it's performance is very low. We are talking what is now an ancient HD7850 that sold for $150+ for years. Besides its power consumption 750Ti has nothing going for it really.

I would go for the Asus GTX760 for $225, after 8% off w/ promo code JUNECLEAN9, ends June 2.

For blackops 2 on 1600x900 I figured a card like that would be powerful enough. They don't perform like high end cards, but the price/performance is still better, the power consumption is be a nice bonus.

And I think there is some value in getting the newest stuff, especially with amd.

then agian we don't have 760's for $225,- here.

it's 220,- after rebate on my screen, and it's a 280, not a 280x, so nigh identical performance too.

What am I getting over the r9 280 with the x? A little overkill never hurt anyone, right?

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-280X-vs-Radeon-R9-280

A little comparison here.

If I were to make a guess what the difference is...I would say that the R9 270X overclocked will match a R9 280. Or come really close to it.

What kind of power supply? I ran 2500k max overclocked and 7970 @ 1175 MHz on a Corsair 520W with 99% load 24/7 without issues. With a decent 600W, you can put an R9 290X OC in a system. I mean an R9 280X would probably peak at 230W and that's for 1.07Ghz versions with high VCore out of the box.

how do you know your GPU is bad? a random guess?

you symptoms could be many things, ram, unstable OC, over heating / thermal issue(s), and more interestingly your power supply unit
those are just to name a few

@ocre I was running the 660ti stock no oc. A few days ago I load steam everything looked ok, then I loaded rust and as I tried to join a server it loaded made a weird sound the graphics glitched then the screen went black my monitor lost signal I heard two short beeps from the computer then a single longer beep then it rebooted itself. After a full virus scan that came back clean I wiped the nVidia drivers reinstalled loaded a rust server and crashed/reboot for fun ran the windows expierance test and crashed/rebooted. Ran a boot from USB kasperski recovery cd and came back clean. Tried some other random windows tools all coming back clean. Wiped the nVidia drivers again reinstalled an older version loaded a rust server and crashed/rebooted. Couldn't find an old restore point I made two weeks prior. Deleted driectX the reinstalled loaded a rust server all was good for a hour then crashed/rebooted. Was doing some of the prior in safe mode and out of safe mode. Then hooked my monitor up to the motherboard hdmi out and pulled the graphics card and has been working fine since...

Have you ran anything to stress your PC on your intergated graphics.

You say it rebooted when running the windows experience test, have you ran it without the gtx660 in it?

You need to stress test your PC (hard with software designed to push your system to full draw) and make sure it is not something like your PSU flaking out under load. See, the graphics card pulls a lot more watts once it is stressed and removing it may put you under the limit. Overtime PSUs become weaker and they wear down. And just like that, they cant provide the power needed anymore.

What are your specs,
CPU, motherboard, PSU, RAM, etc

I would also look into the beeps. Your motherboard is giving you information if you know how to read it. If the code translates to power loss or drop in incoming voltage..................

I am just saying that things are not always that simple. Unless you can put your 660 into another PC or have a different GPU (at least as power hungry as the 660ti) to put in your systyem, its hard to completely determine 100%.

Even stress testing your CPU with IGP, it might not be enough watts to cause your PSU to fail. If it even is the PSU. I still would recommend trying verious stress test, each for several hours, just to see if anything fails on you. But unless you can try that GPU in another system, it is still guessing.

I have seen symptoms similar to what you describe on a PC that had a PSU that couldnt keep up with the load. Certain games would cause the system to completely shut off and then it rebooted. The PSU couldnt keep up, but once it was changed, all was good

But still, this doesnt mean that is your issue. But a weak PSU could be the cause of what your experiencing
