My DVD ROM stopped working

I have a Delta 12X DVD-ROM. I am not sure who makes it. may be lite-on. It was working fine for an year; then all of a sudden it stopped reading disks. Bios detects the drive correctly, but the OS (WinME) wont read any CD or DVD. i tried it in DOS. same read error.

is my drive Dead ? should i try something before i throw this out
