my DVD-ROM pooched?

I recently got a DVD-ROM about three weeks ago (ASUS E616P2) and everything was fine and dandy. Now the past week or so all of a sudden it's having problems recognizing DVD's. When I put the DVD in, the drive will just blink and if I try and start up DVD Decryptor, or My Computer they lock up and stop responding. I know the DVD is fine because it rips in my NEC-3500. Could my DVD-ROM be that dirty all ready from ripping DVD's?

Drive dead, if it's a recent purchase, time to RMA. Also - did you flash any of your (other) drives recently? Those warnings on some IDE flashers to remove all other devices from your IDE bus, are actually a good idea to follow. Some drives based on same/similar chipsets, can get flashed accidentally.

yea the drive isn't even a month old.... it was working fine when I bought it. I've been using it exclusively to rip DVD's. Like I said above, when I put the DVD in the drive just blinks..... Should I try reinstalling chipset drivers? Thanks!

If you're using Nvidia IDE/ATAPI driver:

Try rolling back the driver to the standard Windows IDE/ATAPI driver.

I had similar problems (Nvidia IDE/ATAPI driver from the Nvidia 5.10 driver set). Rolling back the driver to standard Windows driver solved the problem.

Hope this helps!

Seconded - nVidia's IDE drivers are lousy. With them installed, burning a CD resulted in the system locking up every few seconds, until the buffer finally was worked down low enough that Nero stopped the burn.
Standard IDE drivers and everything's fine.

Also, try the drive in another PC if you can. That'll really narrow it down.

ok I'll give that a shot..... I can't test the problem because it seems to be random. I need to figure out if this is a drive problem soon because my 30 day refund policy runs out friday.

EDIT:::

I uninstalled the NVIDIA IDE controller drivers. This didn't seem to alleviate the problem. Let me explain this scenario and hopefully somebody can tell me if this is a drive issue.

I took a DVD I was having trouble with before

Opened My Computer -> Put DVD in -> Recognized it without locking up

Took DVD out

Opened DVD Decryptor -> Selected DVD ROM -> Put DVD in

Now the drives blinks for a minute or so straight. Then DVD Decryptor says "Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present)".

Oh and one other bit of information. I repeated the process with DVD decryptor above without closing it and the second time it picked up the DVD in the drive.

What does all this mean? I believe the actual DVD is fine because i've used it on other drives and such and there is on problem. I'm just trying to figure out if my DVD rom is slowly dying on me.

You're right, I forgot to mention that. That could well be the problem, if those drivers were installed some time before this sudden "failure". Via's IDE drivers are similarly lackluster when it comes to handling optical drives like burners. (Found that one out first-hand.) MS's default IDE drivers are the only ones that I've seen that seem to handle nearly everything flawlessly.

It also wouldn't hurt to try another cable, possibly an 80-conductor ATA-100 one, even if the drive is only ATA-33, depending on the mobo's chipset/BIOS. It can also help enhance noise-immunity if the existing ATA-33 cable is picking up noise, but that's not likely to be the problem in this case, since it's not random and seems to happen every time. Just a general tip, I guess.

I was looking at the cable that connects the drive and it appears to be a new 80 wire one. It's just weird what this drive is doing. I don't want to waste time by sending it back and getting another one if there really is no problem with it. It is so hard to tell. I think I'm going to call tech support this week and see what they say about it.

if it turns out to be the drive this is what I was thinking of getting as a replacement: AOpen 1648/AAP

I've heard that's a good drive.

Hmm...sounds like a software problem if it CAN find the DVD. Do you have the latest DVD Decryptor? If you do, try an old version and if you don't try a new version.

it just seems really sporadic.... Yes I do have the latest version of DVD Decryptor. I haven't made any changes to the software. I don't see why a software problem would all of a sudden come up?

Good point. If you were ripping a lot of dvds, I can see how it would start to fail. My DVD drive is dying too, it can't read dual layered DVDs. However, it can read cds and some DVDs fine. 😕

I HAVE been ripping a lot of DVD's lately. I just don't see why this would start to fail. I thought the drive would be able to handle it. I guess I'll have to RMA the drive. I guess I'll have to give AOpen a try.
