I just finished building my homebuilt pc, everything is working fine, except for my dvd-rom drive. all of the parts are from newegg.com except for my dvd-rom drive which is from my old pc. i have a bunch of burnt data cds with data from my old pc that i want to transfer, but whenever i transfer a medium amount, randomly my pc restarts. i know its not all cds because i installed morrowind and nothing happened, i also installed medal of honor flawlessly. but whenever i try to transfer data off of my cd-r's, it just restarts the pc randomly, usually after a bit of transferring. its kinda like when you hit the cold restart button. its pissing me off, but otherwise, the pc is awesome.

Do you have another drive you could test the CDs on... like one you could put into that current computer?

yeah but i cant hook it up until i get a new cable(the ribbon cable isnt long enough to reach the mobo connectors) so i need to wait till then, and i dont really want to mess anything up after working on this thing for 7 hours today. is there any other way i can transfer the files without going into My Computer or Windows Explorer?

What size is your power supply? (what are your proc, ram, ect) You might be using more wattage that your power suppply can handle.

im using a thermaltake silent purepower 480watt psu, athlon 64 3000+, 512mb of ram(single stick), 120gig seagate HD, 3 case fans, Aopen "AK86-L" K8T800 mobo, NEC DV5700A DVD-rom(this is the drive), MSI Radeon 9800pro, soundblaster live. i dont think its the power supply, i would think it would be more than enough.

I would suggest checking your cpu heatsink and temps. If its not attached properly or you have inadequate case cooling your comp could be resetting when you do anything that requires a lot of work from the cpu.

CPU temp is 37.5C at idle, and 40C at a pretty moderate load(transferring files from DVD-rom drive) and i went over my heatsink many times before starting up my pc.

best way to find out is by swaping out drives. All i can think of if it is the drive it may have some kind of problem that causes a short just large enough to cause the system to reset but not cause the psu buit in protection to activate were you would have to disconect the atx power cable to the motherboard.
