After suffering through months and months of disk errors everytime I try to watch one of my many DVD movies I broke down and bought the latest Sony Blu-Ray player BDP-S350.

I also bought 'Iron Man' on Blu-Ray to showcase my new technology and man does it look great! What a great movie too. I loved it!

For anyone interested, my system consists of a Samsung 50" DLP 1080p Hi-Def TV, a Harmon-Kardon AVR500 receiver powering Klipsch RF-3 mains and center speaker, Klipsch R-5800 (I think) surround speakers, and a Klipsch KSW-10 Sub. For TV I have DirecTV with their HD package.

Anyway, I would have spent $200 for a decent replacement DVD player so I just spent a little more and bought the Sony Blu-Ray player.

Okay, what is your question?

I see a problem, in that the $200 DVD player would have a much better upscaling chip than the S350. So, you would probably get (marginally) better picture quality on SD DVD with the $200 DVD Player (I.e. OPPO, etc) than the Sony. I still think you made the right choice (to go Blu-ray) especially if you expect to buy all new movies in that format.

As for 'Iron Man,' it was an okay movie worth a rent, but a not a buy for me....then again I'm not to big on Marvel cartoon characters based movies.

OP: How's the upscaling on the BDP-S350? I've been playing a bunch of DVDs using the PS3 and the picture quality looks fantastic.

Question? I didn't realize that was a prerequisite for posting a new thread...

Edit-Upscaling looks good to me. I can't tell a difference.

You probably made the right choice. The Oppo DV-980H is definitely better at upscaling DVDs, but BR-Ds _finally_ show some signs of price drops, and who wants to upscale when you can get native sources?
