So lately, my notebook DVD recorder has only been able to read DVDs and take information off of them, but cannot recognize blank dvds or burn them. Is this possible? Do I need to replace the whole drive?

P.S. the enable CD recording is already cleared and I AM able to burn CDs, just not DVDs....it's weird

It gives me this message:
"Can't perform the specified function because of I/O device error"

Thanks in advance

May be it is set for cd recording
open My Computer
right click DVD drive
click properties
click Recording tab
clear the Enable CD recording box if checked
click OK

is there any difference in the laser when reading DVDs or CDs? The DVD-drive says CD-Rom drive when looking at the properties

Its either the drive partially failing or possibly the application you use to burn DVD's has been corrupted somhow & needs to be reinstalled. (remember XP doesn't support DVD burning natively)

Yes. There are two different lasers involved. Could be that the DVD lens is dirty, or that the DVD laser is simply malfunctioning. Try connecting an external DVD burner to your laptop and burning with it. That will verify your software setup and confirm or deny a hardware problem in your built-in drive.

Aside from cleaning the lense of the DVD laser or maybe opening up the drive & removing wads of dust/dirt etc that could be preventing the lense from moving freely by gumming up gears or maybe making the belt slip, theres not much you can do.

Most notebooks have standard DVD drives but not all... take a look at the manufacturers website for more info on your model.
