My dreams of a 3D Ultima Online have been dashed

http://www.uo.com/UOKRpressrelease.html

Pics on the bottom of the page. This brings their graphics almost on par with Diablo 1. Talk about a waste of programming effort.

UO added a 3D isometric client with their Third Dawn update but people stuck with the 2D because there was no perceived benefit. I guess they think trying the same thing 4 years later will prove more fruitful.

EA Mythic, formerly Mythic Entertainment, and the Ultima Online team are working together to bring about one of the most ambitious upgrades of any operating MMORPG. Created in such a way that current players who choose not to upgrade will be able to play without interruption, Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn will ship in 2007 for PC.

Does this also mean that resources from Warhammer Online are going to be drained to focus on this expansion pack?

I guess they are following the principle: "throw enough sh!t at the wall and something is bound to stick"

No. This expansion was already being beta tested at the time EA acquired Mythic.

The big question, really, becomes what happens with the Mythic staff after WHO is released. One of my guesses was a 3D UO, but that seems extremely unlikely now. I'd say it's almost a certainty that the staff will be split, and half will support WHO and churn out an expansion pack or two and the others will be merged with some of the UO staff and put to work on UO2.

I JUST WANT FFA PVP WITH FULL PLAYER LOOTING AND NO FVCKIN "RAIDS" AND NO FVCKIN LEVELS DAMN IT.

There.

I miss UO too 🙁

The only server there is a permadeath one. I kinda like being able to respawn.

You don't get it and you never will. UO was WAY more than just open PvP.

Heh, I clicked the link before reading your post and the first thing I thought was "holy crap that looks like Diablo". I've got to say though, that is leaps and bounds above their partial 3d transition peice of crap they did years ago. 3d monsters in the same 2d world, wow that looked ugly as sin.

You know, if they pulled off a true-3D and allowed for rotating camera view, I'd be really happy.

I think you and I may be the only people here who appreciated UO for what it really was: The greatest game ever made. I don't make that claim lightly, I've played a lot of great games in my life. But I played UO, sometimes obsessively, for 7 years. And it's still going strong today.

Unfortunately, no matter what they do to the engine to improve things, I don't want to rejoin a UO where people have been playing for the last 9 years, and all the horrible changes made over the years still exist. IE: Power hour, trammel, ninjas, etc. I'll just have to wait for Darkfall to come along and destroy my social life. 😀

TRAMMEL was the downfall for me.

I agree, Trammel was the end of it. I knew when those stupid moonstones started showing up that we were in for trouble. The subsequent housing rush and desertion of Felucia really ruined the game.

Part of UO's greatness was that a PK could take you down and take everything you had on you. There was risk, excitement, it was great. Your heart beat faster when you saw that red name on the edge of your screen. If you wore valorite outside of town, you were a target.

Sigh... memories.

Well, I thought a full 3D conversion would give them the perfect excuse to strip the game of a lot of the nonsense they've added the past few years.....i.e. 'we can't balance ninjas with the new engine'.

I hold far more hope for UO2 anyway. But people don't remember all the non-combat stuff that was in UO and I'm worried that may be the focus. I used to mine ore for fun. I'd go hunt in the jungle cause there were more birds than in the forest and I needed their feathers for arrows. I once harvested some wheat growing near Britain into a bundle. Then walked to Yew and ground the wheat into flour. Filled a pitcher with water. Walked back to Britain to the bakery and baked a loaf of bread in the furnace.

Do you remember getting armor repaired in the early days? You had to GIVE it to a stranger at the blacksmith and let them fix it and return it and you've pay them their fee. The social dynamic in that game was unbelievable.

I wasn't around when that was changed I don't think. Maybe I was.... they made it where it could be repaired in the trade window?

Yeah, I doubt we'll ever see anything like UO again. How long have they been working on UO2 now?

Mining or and using my pack mule to hold tons of it. I remember crafting my first set of ringmail and while I continued mining, looking mighty good in my new armour, a mage popped up and blasted me into the ground. Oh man was i pissed.

I killed him a few months later and took hundreds of reagents and other assorted goodies 🙂

Running through the woods chopping lumber to make some furniture I come across a corpse, unlooted. I take so much that i can't move so i have to drag his breastplate all the way to Minoc from near the closest dungeon - forget the name. Covetous?

Dynamically social, that's the ticket.

We should have an AT grouping on one of the free servers or start our own. We obviously all miss the same thing about UO, the social dynamic.
