You could start by creating, and obtaining those, respectively.
Then get a job at a local newspaper as a camera man
Then a job at a better newspaper
Maybe work at a lesser known magazine
Then contact National Geographic with your resume and portfolio

nah, I don't want to work for a newspaper. I just want to go straight to National Geographic.

Portfolio? I've taken a few pictures with my mom's 4 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera.

So, it sounds like I need to start by getting a good camera, maybe a Canon EOS-10D or 20D, and building my portfolio.

Okok. Let's start somewhere - you could simply start by looking up a current photog at Nation Geographic, and look at their reume/photo history, and see why that person stood out as compared to the rest of the crowd.

There are some genius photographers out there, I know, but if you reserch enough of the non-celebrated photographers, you'd see a trend of what they're looking for, I think.

That's a great idea! Thanks!

Here's what I have so far:

1. Save up for a really nice digital camera (well, find out if NG takes digital photos, first of all).
2. Practice a lot, and build up a portfolio.
3. Subscribe to NG
4. Research photographers, especially those who work for NG.

I just think it'd be an awesome job to have. Go around the work and take pictures of neat places, things, and people. I loved flipping through the National Geographic magazines as a kid, it made me want to travel and visit those places.

This is probably all just in speculation, but what the heck, it's fun to dream 🙂

It sounds like you just want to be a photographer for NG, and not just a photographer... Can you really put your soul into it the way that people who love to be photographers do?
 
Pay some of your friends to run around naked, take pictures...send the pictures to NG claiming you found a new tribe.
