If I were to build a network based on the Windows Media Center model, I would have a media server at the core of the network.

I'd have a Antec P180 box with an Intel Quad-core processor and 4 GB of ram.
* Areca-1220 Raid card with 8 750GB Hard Drives
* 2 Hauppague PVR-500 MCE TV Tuners
* HD Homerun Digital Tuner

So this system runs Windows Vista Home Premium. This serves as the server for all media. Recording 4 analog shows and 2 HD shows at any time.

At each Television I would run a Shuttle PC (Geforce 8600, 2GB of ram, DDL) with a Blu-ray player. They will be media center extenders, and leech off the server. Now all I have to do is save up the $5000 it will cost to put all this together. Sound like a good idea?

I was thinking about similar setups, although I'd like the main server to run WHS, with a weaker machine running Home Premium with the tuners. Add a 360 (or other extender) to every tv and you're set.

Is there any downside to this? You get the added benefit of automated backup on the network.

That is true, with further reasearch, I would have a 360 at each TV instead of a shuttle PC, cheaper, and more functional.
