My Domain Host Just Charged My CC Without My Permission

WTF do these mofos get the idea they can just go ahead and charge my card when my plan is due for renewal? :|

I knew it was going to be due on the 9th, so I sent them an email on that date, asking if they would match the price of a competitor's plan. They sent an auto-confirmation of receipt of that email, and assigned it a trouble ticket number. Five days later they have still not replied to that ticket, and I see a charge on my CC from the 9th for the full price of their plan!

I'll be damned if I'm staying with them now, but I'd like to know if there is some kind of law against charging a card without permission?

Eh, just call your CC company, and sort it all out, shouldn't be all that difficult, but a pain the ass no less

Pretty much every service I've ever used does that.

Edit: Think about it in the context of a monthly plan - would they need your permission to bill you every month? They probably notified you when you signed up that it would renew automatically. Talk to them, they may refund it if you say you wanted to cancel. Sorry.

HTF can they get away with that? Where the hell did I sign any such agreement? Suppose I changed CC accounts or something? Oh, and what's the deal with not replying to my request? They figure they'll just take their chances, and hope I let it slide? Fvck that, they just lost a customer altogether, and they sure as hell WILL get that charge off my CC immediately, or I'll dispute the charge, and raise as much hell as possible. HTF can this even be legal?

Obviously you didn't sign anything, but you probably agreed to it when you signed up. You know, that box they usually make you check that says "I read such and such an agreement" that everyone checks even though they didn't actually read the agreement? You can probably find it on their website. Not replying to your request - that's bad customer service, although it doesn't sound like you gave them much time.

Edit: If your card is cancelled, they call you for a new one. If you don't give them one, they cancel your account. That's how I cancelled my account with iPowerweb, I didn't feel like dealing with their customer service after the previous trouble I had with them. I was in the same situation as you actually, except that I forgot my renewal date was coming up. They offered to refund the money, but I had issues transferring the domain name so I just stayed with them for a while longer.

It was probably in the TOS somewhere that you would be auto-billed at the end of your current term.

I do see on their current signup page, that the amount is for $XX.XX annually. When I first got my account, it was for a MUCH lower price, and I'd have been happy to keep that price as a recurring fee. The account I'm being billed for now, was opened at the higher fee, and probably had "annually" in the sign up page.

I just got off the phone with them, and the account has been closed, and charge has been credited.

Glad it worked out in your favor. How much space/bandwidth do you use? If it's a small site, I can host you for free.

Is Ornery bitching about his domain registrar or web host?

Good question... he called it a domain host, could go either way. :) I assumed he meant web host because I don't think he'd complain about something that costs ~$10 everywhere, and I don't think he'd haggle on the cost when it doesn't vary much more than $1 from registrar to registrar.

Well this is Ornery ;) I'm sure he meant web host rather than domain registrar.

If he needs hosting for a small personal site, I can also provide that free of charge.

It's the host of my domain, not domain name.

The thing hasn't been used in the last year by my son, so I'm going to just start using it for hosting pictures. My current host gives me 500MB for $34.00/year, and I'll probably bail on them next time it's due, without even giving them a chance to match prices. It was only about $10.00 when I started up with them.

I just signed up with UltraSurge for $17.50 per year, and 600MB space.

...and thanks loads the offer to host for free. I'll be happy to return the favor if somebody needs some pictures posted.

You guys are the best! That also goes for one of my current hosts in my sig, Cernax. Don't want anybody to think I'm getting any greif from them, because they ALWAYS take care of any problems IMMEDIATELY!

BTW, I'm posting on our new Powerbook from the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Hotel at the University of Cincinnati. We're setting up our son's schedule, and I should be getting the software for this puppy at the bookstore pretty soon. What games should I look for? :p

This is bad advice. An unjustified chargeback (one that gets overturned) will put a negative mark on your credit report.

my webhost notifies me via email 30 days before the new annual is due... and they go ahead and charge it automatically without my intervention. This auto-charge is stated when you sign-up... telling you they will auto-renew unless told otherwise.
