So a couple weeks ago my mother (who is a veterinary assistant) noticed a small bump on my male dalmations's bum. Had it checked out, it's a tumor. Last week, after some tests, it was determined it was cancerous and must be removed ASAP.

He saw a specialist today and she gave the time range. 🙁 It's never too late to give up hope, but at some point you have to face the fact that one of your best friends might not make it until the end of the year.

The only hope we have is that it hasn't metastasized, which I assume means the cancer hasn't spread from outside the tumor, or it the tumor hasn't burrowed into vitals. 🙁

So far the bloodwork that has come back has suggested it hasn't spread, but we have to wait for a more advanced test to come back tomorrow. If it hasn't spread, time is of the essence and he'll probably have to have it removed this week, but if it is deep in the muscle, then he may lose some muscle around his hind end... which means he'd have "potty problems" 🙁

So yesterday he has his sugery to remove the offending tumor thingy. They also removed a bladder stone that they noticed while doing some more X-Rays. He's at work with my mom right now so she can keep an eye on him, but he was half-asleep last night. While he was awake, he would wimper with every breath. The surgeon said they believe they got all the tumor, and it hadn't gotten to his lymph nodes or his anal glands, so things are very optimistic now. We won't know for certain until next week if everything was a sucess though.

Thanks everybody 🙂

and malignant is the base of the word you're looking for. masticate is chew.

the specialist said masticate... so maybe it has a different meaning when it comes to cancer.

that sucks man. very good looking dog.

but everybody's gotta go sometime - the untimely deaths are the ones that suck.

aww, cute dog!
I wish you all the best... I'd be pretty choked if I had that kind of news to deal with.. and I have 3 pets (2 dogs and a cat)

best wishes!

I'm sorry to hear that man 🙁

I had to put down our dog of 14 years last Monday. He was just very old (it was a Maltese and the vet said 14 is very old for that type), and got very sick on saturday night. Come monday morning he was basically hiding in the closet, waiting to die. it was the saddest thing i had ever seen in my life 🙁

i had to go to work at 3pm and my mom got off at 4pm and took him to the vet to put him to sleep. it was a very hard time at work, but I knew that I did not want to come home from work and see him suffering in pain, so I knew it was best for him. before I went to work, everytime I would look at him I would start crying and would just hold him in my arms.

it was very sad and a very hard day, we had him since he was 2 weeks old. it will be a hard few days after he goes, but you will get over it. i still say a prayer for my dog everynight when I sleep, and it sure is wierd coming in the house and not hearing his little collar and see him run to the door 🙁

Sorry to hear about the news 🙁

[edit]Well, I guess I should read the other posts before posting.[/edit]

Sorry to hear that, hope it turns out to be ok for him. We had a dog that had a tumor in that area that they removed. They then found another tumor around his windpipe which they could not remove. When they found the tumor around the windpipe they didn't think he had too long to live but he lasted 2 years and died at age 17. Never give up hope.

Very sorry to hear that but the outlook looks positive! One of my dogs was given a month to live with liver problems. The vet wanted to put him down. We dicided, because he was still in good health to not go that route, yet. It's over a year later and he is putting on weight! When the vet saw him come in for a yearly physical he couldn't believe the dog made it this far and actually said he is better!

I'm not trying to give false hope but you never know what you care and attention can do for your pets.

Dogs are the greatest!

If you have a pic I'd put him on a Memorial Web page I have.

we had a pug that died suddenly from a stroke, something the vet says is common in pugs. I didn't like that fvcker because my family doesn't know how to train dogs (and I didn't want them in the first place so I wasn't gonna volunteer), but I must admit it was cute as hell and I wish our family did train him because it would've been a cool ass dog to have.

We have a 13 year old black lab mix that doesn't seem to be nearing his end, but when it comes I'll cry like a baby.

Sorry to hear about your dog.

My good friend and co-worker found out last night that his dog has cancer. I believe it is such that there isn't much to be done. Very limited time left with his 14 year old dog.

Good luck to you and your doggie. We lost our family dog on Monday (nearly 14 years old) so I know what you're feeling. 🙁

Sorry to hear about it. I don't want to get you down but just enjoy your 6-8 months cause its more than I had with mine (he was 10 years old). From the day he began coughing (hundreds of tumors had filled his lungs) to the day we put him down it was all within just a few days which was pretty quick.
