my 14 year old dog's arthritis has been acting up recently, and aspirin isn't cutting it anymore. Does anyone know of any medicine we can give him that will help him out?

I saw some commercial for some stuff, but i'm afraid that it will do more damage than good. i know they don't test those products properly, and there is no FDA for animals.

any advice will be useful. thanks

If your dog is suffering take it to a veterinarian. To do anything less would be abusive. You are responsible for your dog's well being and asking questions like this in ATOT is really ignorant.

as great as that sounds.. a lot of people love their pet, but cannot afford to take them to the vet.. so he's probably looking for a cheaper solution.. the ignorant thing would be doing nothing at all...

One thing we are NOT is abusive to our dog. we have spent over $5000 in the past 5 years on surgeries for him to rid him of tumor problems that interfered with his daily life.

I am able to multitask, and in doing so was hoping for some firsthand experiences. He will be going to the vet this week

also, he is not suffering to where he can't do anything. he is able to do all his daily activities, we just notice a weakness in his legs.

Well, good to know that you can afford vet treatment for the poor dog.

While I can't offer advice to you on this, I don't think anyone else can either. For technical stuff this forum is okay. I would suggest taking questions like this to a forum that deals with dogs, perhaps even your breed of dog. (What is he anyway?) You're way more liable to get useful stuff there. Really, this is like asking computer advice on a car forum.

Hope he gets better soon.

Rimadyl
Its a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

My shepard is on it because she has hip dysplasia and it usually works pretty well. One of my parents dogs was also on it for arthritis. Its $1-$2 a pill depending on the vet for the 100mg versions. You maybe able to get away with half a one a day depending on size of the dog and the amount of pain it is in.

even if we were not in such a financial position, we would have cut our costs to afford treatment for our dog. my mom came to this country with $20 in her pocket, living at a YWCA. she would walk on North Ave. ( a VERY bad street in Baltimore ) to go to school, while sending half her income back home to india.

btw, he's a cocker/poodle mix, and he still has a baby face :). he weighs about 30 lbs

thanks for the advice
