I know there are quite a few dog owers around here so I figured id ask.

Once a year I get a few large mice, actually I think they are rats.
Anyways I usually set a few traps , kill a few and I dont see them again for another year.

Well my 12 yo male Pit Bull is , well 12 yo so I decided about 9 months ago to get another dog. After alot of searching I found a wonderful 1 yr old female Pit Bull that I just love to death.

Anways to make a long story short she spotted this year's mouse a few days ago and just awhile ago I heard a little scrambling, Lucy comes around the corner with a mouse hanging out of her mouth..crushed its skull.

Now I am not sure if she intended to eat it or not but I took it away and flushed it down the toilet.

My concern now is what if she catches one in the middle of the night and eats it?
Are mice/rats safe to eat for a healthy dog?

My male dog never had any interest in rodents ..just cats and other dogs so this is all new to me.

She has been pacing the house since last night almost non-stop , she will not stop looking for another mouse since she caught that one. I am almost worried she is going to colaspe from exhaustion.

I can't imagine that a dog would be harmed by anything a freshly killed mouse (or any other non-venomous animal) would be carrying.

Here are the obligatory pics, I took these this morning. She monitored underneath the fridge area for about 7 hours straight (no joke!). She just now got tired of it and went outside to look.

She probably won't eat it, just catch it and kill it. It's the thrill of the hunt that dogs (typically) enjoy. If you didn't keep her fed, that might be another story. As to the question of whether it would be harmful...not likely.

i doubt she would eat it since she has easy access to food and isnt hungry. shes just happy to be protecting her/your territory from an intruder. im not a dog expert tho.

my dog has dug up a few moles in my yard. he never ate them, but he would chew and roll on them, and fling them around in the air.

Eating mice will only harm the dog if you've been using poison to kill the mice. My father in law killed my spouse's dog that way. Bad way to go. Other than that, eating the fleas that mice usually have will most likely give a dog worms, so make sure to de-worm your dog occasionally. Eating the mice is probably good for the dog. That's how dogs used to live.

Doubt there's anything wrong with it. My dogs and cat kill mouse all the time, and play with them. A little disgusting, because they'll drop it at my feet hoping i would play with them.

Just make sure to keep your dogs well fed and DO NOT use rodent poisoning.

It's probably safer to let a dog eat mice than it is to give them those rawhide chew toys/bones. The rawhide is known to cause "blockage" in dogs who chew up and eat them too much.

I heard that cats and dogs eating mice and such is better for them because of all the extra nutrients they get from them that doesn't normally come in store bought animal food.

Hah, that first pic is cool. I'm used to seeing red-eye, but it looks like your dog has God Mode on or something.

I'm more suprised you flushed a mouse down the toilet. Doesn't seem like the best thing for the plumbing system.

I doubt it'd cause a problem... besides, we've all heard the stories of the mice/rats coming UP thru the sewer pipes... don't see why they couldn't just as easily go back down. ;)
