My dig camera shuts my PC off

My friend has a Dell Dimension E310 PC. It had a bad hard drive so I put a new 320GB SATA drive in it. Loaded a fresh install of XP MCE. Loaded SP3 and all available updates. PC runs great, EXCEPT.... if I plug either of his Digital Cameras into it via USB cable the PC immediately reboots. I have tried different USB ports, different cables. One camera is Samsung, one is Sanyo. Both worked prior to new HD and OS load

My advice is never connect a digicam to the PC - why? Get a decent (inexpensive) media reader writer and transfer data that way. Faster, safer, and more efficient.

Since the problem presents itself with two different cameras, my sense is that the culprit is XP MCE - a famously bad and buggy OS.

Trust me I agree. They are so stubborn in there ways they want it to work the way they're used to. New info if I plug it in through a simple non powered hub, it works. I tried a pci usb card though, no luck. So I assume some kind of driver conflict issue

Sounds like a grounding issue.

I agree, had the same sort of issue with an old PC of my parents. Also, disable auto restart on system fail, if you get a BSOD, then its probably a driver or OS issue, if there is still no error (ie. it still immediately restarts) it is probably an issue with the USB/case grounding.

I do get a BSOD, but its a generic one that tells me nothing. And I only ruled out grounding because both dig cameras work fine in any other PC. And all the ports on the PC work fine with any other USB device, thumb drive, external HD, mouse, kb, etc.

Ic, (lemme guess, 0x0000007B?) I'd stick with the hub then, if that's feasible.

Did you install the drivers before or after you ran updates for OS?

Drivers after updates I believe. I know I manually installed SP3 before doing drivers, because it makes HD audio install easier
