My desktop won't connect to the internet

I have a couple computers, a Windows desktop and a Linux laptop. I'm currently posting from the Linux laptop. There are 2 ethernet jacks in my dorm room, one of which works. For some reason, the networking will not work on my desktop.

If I plug the working network cable in the desktop, it recognizes the connection, says it has activity, says it's operational, etc., but there it will not send or receive data. I've tried restarting, updating the drivers, detecting a new IP (it can't get one, for some reason), manually inputting the networking info from my laptop, nothing helps. I thought I'd try for suggestions before taking it to a tech, maybe putz around with it some more and see if I can't get it to work.

Yeah, nevermind. I hate this friggin' computer and love it at the same time; I plugged it in again, reset it again, and it works now. Posting from the desktop now.

Bump to try to get assistance. Maybe I should just give up on the onboard LAN and reinstall my NIC card. But that would mean I'd have to uninstall my TV card... which doesn't really work anyway...

Well, when I get my portable HDD in and can back it up, I guess I'll just either reinstall Windows, install Vista pre-RC1, or install SuSE, since I guess no help here.
