My dentist (or dental hygenist) is a sadist!

So I go to the dentist for a checkup and they decide they want to do a "pocket chart" and cleaning. This lady went after my teeth and gums like I was a Jew during WWII and she was the friggin Gestapo! I was bleeding all over including on her gauze and on that little bib. Everytime I'd rinse and spit it out it was bloody. Then she tells me I need to get an electric toothbrush and floss and that for 7-10 days when I floss it will bleed but that should eventually stop. Damn woman!!

Every dentist I had gone to (except the last one) had used the standard spinning thing when doing a teeth cleaning. They dig some stuff out of the little cup and then it spins around and they polish your teeth.

The last one I went to literally sandblasted my teeth. I had to wear safety goggles, a splash shield, etc. They put gel stuff on my lips so they wouldn't get all torn up. It was the worst experience for teeth cleaning ever...

was that just a cleaning, or for removing cavities? i know they have a drill-less technique that uses blasted particles that doesn't produce any discomfort... thats what im going to have to get done next time i go in... i cant do drills anymore

likely you have some kind of gum disease if it bleeds like that.

ya, i'm starting to get gum diasease in my lower back gums so that's why she claimed they bled so much. But obviously if you poke at my gums with a sharp hook they are going to bleed. And she was insanely rough....perhaps she thought I liked it rough.

I  my dentist, well at least the one I had been seeing. He delayed his vacation on the Thursday before Good Friday to bond a tooth fragment on I had just broken. This was having to drive 2 hours in from out of town. No dentists were answering the emergency numbers in town, grr.

I know what you mean about the hygenists though. I think they have a contest to see who can soak up the most blood on the bib from their patients :(

That's when you ask for the gas! :D Actually the hygenist offered me the gas before she started last time :Q

When your gums get bad they have to be rough to get all of the infection out. You need to floss more if you don't want it to be so bad. But seeing as I know you won't, try to floss at least once a week and use Listerine daily.

Yeah, my dentists pretty good also. Called him on CHRISTMAS MORNING last year because I had excruciating pain (this easily hurt twice as much as wisdom teeth extraction) in my left top front tooth. He told me to take IB Profen, and a narcotic pain killer if i had any (which i did have from my wisom teeth extraction). He saw me the NEXT day, and prescribed an antibiotic (the root was infected-->inflamation-->pain), and hydrocodone for the pain.

Needless to say, hes an awesome dentist.

yup, that's exactly it. I never had that before. Apparently I got all 3s except a few 4s and 5s on the bottom in the back.

In my experience, brushing every single area in great detail and for a long time works just as well. I hate floss, and I havn't had any problems at all since I started brushing properly. I brush twice a day, and on one of them I try to go for at least 10 minutes, getting every single place.

Or perhaps she thought you weren't a wuss, but thats obviously not true...:)

Yeah, I hate teeth. Pain in the ass to take care of, and all they seem to do is rot.

ah. good stuff. i got gum giblets on my dentist's bib as well. results are great though. no more bleeding when i brush or floss. he gave me a sonic care elite toothbrush. i'll never go back to regular brushing. the soniccare may feel abrasive at first but only for a couple days (while your gums are healing). be sure to not get any food in the gums while they're healing (floss after eating).
