My Dell 4600 Only displays Symbols, Not Letters

My Dell 4600 with XP Pro is now displaying symbols like arrows and triangles,

instead of letters. I guess it is a System font.

Help!
 
I assume that it is displaying these in windows, and not at the bios level, right? If so, have you tried loading into safe mode? Have you tried switching the themes and fonts back and forth between different options? You could also try using system restore if this is a recent problem (you might want to list what you were doing when this happened).
