My dell 300 watt PSU can power the 8800 gt?!!

I heard that someone people say it can. Is that true?

Well, that was me so I'll clarify again. If it's rated at 300W, then probably not. What I said is some 530s came with better power supplies (more amps and dual rail though I don't know what they are rated) so you should check what you have. You'll want at least about 25A or more.

I had a Dell 300 watt PS that could handle 8 hard drives on my celeron 1.8ghz. (as well as optical drive, dual ethernet cards, integrated video, several case fans and CPU fan, and 2 sticks of ram.) Hard drives may not use any power when Idle, but when booting up, and all 8 of them try to start spinning up at the same time, It puts a heavy load an the power supply.

Unfortunately, it couldn't hack it when I installed the 9th hard drive, so I upgraded to a 430 watt.

Dell PSU's are suprisingly good.

You could take the gamble. If it doesn't work you can always throw your own Aftermarket PSU in there (Finding the proper form factor).

I would say "yes" to this question. I'm pretty sure a google search will come up with results.

I've installed 8800 GTs into Acers with 300W PSUs with only around 20-23A total amperage, some of these with quad cores too.

Obviously i don't recommend it, but some people refuse to spend the money for something better, so i just warn them they're doing this at their own risk.

Interestingly enough, i've yet to see any of them come back with blown up PSUs.

I installed a 3870 in my friend's Dell Vostro 200 that had only a 300w PS. The 3870 and 8800GT are very close in power consumption and he hasn't experience any instability since I installed it back in December.

Yeah, Dell puts decent PSUs in their system. They may not have high wattage ratings, but they're usually good enough to drive a decent video card. It can be tricky.. A friend of mine had a Compaq with a 250w and he was running an 8800GTS 512 for quite awhile with no problems. However, when he installed Mass Effect, his system started randomly rebooting in game. Upgrading the PSU fixed the issue.

Still, he was playing WoW, TF2, etc with no problems before that.
