My dBpowerAmp mp3 encoder trial has expired and I am in search of another free alternative. Specificly, I want to convert current MP3s to a lower bitrate to fit on my MP3 player.

I have tried to look for something as good as dBpowerAmp but came up short.

You've used db, you know it works well, why not support it!?

I'm cheap, but I am considering it. :p

Blade encoder - use WinDAC and Blade or Lame plugins if you want to encode directly from audio CDs

Download the LAME codec and decompress the ZIP file. Inside the ACM filder is an INF file - right click it and select Install. That'll install the ACM LAME encoder.

Now, in dbPowerAmp, select WAV output, and change the compression type to LAME MP3.

An error pops up while converting

Error Whilst Converting:

Unable to write to 'C:\1.wav', disk full?

The unfinished file is 8MB and I have 9GB of free space.

And the file is just garbage. Any other ideas Jeff7?

iTunes also allows file conversion, but unfortunately their mp3 encoder is subpar (but you are recompressing lossy anyways, so you're already messing up your sound quality)

yeah, and with iTunes you're restricted to whatever format Apple wants to support. dbpoweramp supports just about every audio format you could want, and then some. It truly is a great tool.

iTunes isn't bad as a basic player/music manager. Its playlist creation abilities are particularly good. But there is no doubt that dbpoweramp is a more fully featured program/set of programs as a whole. I have gotten heavy use of their audio conversion program to go from one lossless format to another, and it works quite well.
