After 25 months of pure cable goodness, i have terminated my cable modem contract and will be switching to DSL in my new apartment, since comcast@home doenst offer it where i live. I have to go to dial up until then. I think i will hit juno's free dial up just to check email and such.

So here i smy question:

I can get speakeasy.net DSL for $59.99 a month, with free install, and $99 hardware charge after a $150 rebate. This company has an extremely high DSLreports rating.

or:

Ameritech, which is $49.99 a month, free install, free hardware, bad DSLreports rating.

I'm kinda strapped for cash, so which do i choose?

I have been a Speakeasy iDSL customer for 1 year now and overall have found them to be very good. They went through some growing pains from January through March of this year when they picked up a lot of customers from the collapse of Flashcom and Northpoint but they seem to have cleared those hurdles. The only iffy part of this is the long term viability of Covad Communications. Speakeasy does say they have contingency plans if Covad goes under but who really knows for sure? If it were me and I was strapped for cash I would probably try the Ameritech route first if they are not making you commit to a service period before you can leave them. If they do not work out for you then look at Speakeasy for service.
One other thing to factor in with Speakeasy is how far you are from one of their POPs. They have opened POPs this year in Denver, Washington DC, Boston, and Atlanta. Their main POP is located in Seattle and their main East Coast POP is in New York.

Wow...I didn't realize I had it so good.

I signed up in September of last year for $39.95 a month with free dsl modem and installation. My year of service is almost over, and the monthy rate is now $49.95 according the their website (SWBELL.NET).

Anyhow, how bad is Ameritech's rating? And in what areas of service (i.e. connection stability, tech support, etc.)? For example, connection stability is extremely important to me. I have a panic attack if I can't connect to the service ;)

Speakeasy's $99 charge seems a bit high, especially after rebate.

Ameritech

Speakeasy

And so far, Ameritech has been a pain. i first called them over a week ago, and asked for service, and they gave me a story of how i was already getting it(!!!). This was a bad thing, so they killed it and told me the would call back, they never did. Then i called on tuesday of this week, and tried again. The person said their database was corrupted, and i would have to be called back. They called, but i was at work, so my girlfriend gave them my work number and extension, but they did not call me. The salesperson did say DSL was available where i live. I called them back, and was told DSL is NOT available. Hung up, called right back, talked to a different salesperson, and was tod DSL is available...
