This has been adapted from what I told another member here on AT and he suggested I post it...

I'm just doing my thing out in the field in the rain right now (yesterday) or should say waiting on it to stop so I can check a Cummins engine that went under water...😛 Pulled the injectors and found water on top of 3 pistions and water in the turbo/intercooler so hope it did not bend rods but looks like it did...? If so I will end up changing the engine in the field (about 50 miles from the shop)... My day :\ (Was then asked how it managed to get under water)... Oh forgot to say why it became a submarine...😀 The engine is 6.7ltr and is in a PC200LC-8 Excavator and the owner who is a lawyer was digging next to a huge pond and got to close on a steep bank and slid it into the water... But thinking he could get it out did just the opposite of what you should do and it sunk even farther till it sucked water into the intake... He got it out with another trackhoe but its toast... Everything including the intercooler, turbo and as for rods we just use a measuring rod down through the injector hole to the top of the pistons on TDC... Kinda thought about putting this in ATG but the pic's are at work and not sure if anyone would be interested...?

Sorry was just a typo but yes some do say it with the "g"... G is for Grammar Nazi...😛

Inside the cab just behind the seat, notice the mildew on the paper towels...

Intake horn removed looking down into the intake just under the heater block...

Heh wow, I bet he made an expensive mistake.

What is the correct way to get one of those things out once it starts slipping in? Looking forward to pics.. What a mess.. 😱

We know he knows how to spell it. Thanks for adding such wonderful commentary to this discussion.

Wonder what the insurance adjuster is gonna do with this one. !!!

Keep us updated.

Well I've heard(audibly.. as in with my actual ears) plenty of people say it with a 'g'

Its sad to see such a good motor get the smack down by pure stupidity. He should have quickly shut the machine off and had another unit come and pull him out of the water.

I hear people mispronounce and mangle the English language on a daily basis. You must be really busy if you take the time to go ahead and correct every grammatical mistake you see on the internet. Let us know how that goes.

We talk about cars here not grammar...

A couple more... And yes its a Komatsu and a Cat would have not been worth retrieving...😛

At this point it looks like I will be going back out to the machine and pull the engine and other related parts and bring it back to the shop then build up another complete engine and go back out and install it along with everything else needed and will exchange the hyd. fluid as well... Oh they had also pulled the planetary gears in the final drives so will have to put them back together as well... Also just got the word today the owner is wanting to trade it in after we fix it for a larger PC300 size machine... To me that means he can just tear up bigger stuff... 😀

I do not know if he has insurance on it...? He paid cash as it was a used machine with like 200 hours on it when he bought it from us... I want to sell him a big dozer so he can really get into trouble...:sneaky:

Stuffed my fat fingers down its throat and the water is about 1/2" deep inside...

Discharge side of the turbo going to the intercooler which is full of nasty stuff too...

Know exactly what you are doing, and what is going to happen next is a good start. I have 20 plus years of excavator experience and you can get into some very hairy situations if you move before you think.

Got to go back to the machine today... Good news and more bad news... I had good enough weather that I was able to put the turning tool in and the engine was not stuck it rolled over quite easy with a short handle 1/2" ratchet... I found water on top of 4 of the 6 pistons but to my surprise NO bent rods...? It must have been idling when it hydro-locked...? But after sampling the engine oil I was going to use the starter to spin it over and pump the water out of the cylinders and pour engine oil in the injector ports and lube it so to try and prevent more damage to the cylinder walls... Went to crank on it and nothing no monitor boot or relay's clicking just nothing... So went to the batteries and they were hot and checked the fuse links which were good, next to the fuse panel behind the seat and they were good and had power to the ones that should have it... Well to the book I went and was looking at the wiring diagram and tracing and back and forth to the machine and ended up pulling all the cover stuff behind the seat where the fuse panel & pump controller, relays and other assorted electrical is and found the water made it within 1" of the pump controller but that was not the issue it was all the plugs below the water line... The wires going to them were corroded like real bad and just to touch them they would break so that was the problem it needs a complete wiring harness 🙁 (not cheap at all)... Tomorrow I have to make a list of everything that needs to be replaced with part numbers...😛 Looks like it will be around $50-65K with parts a labor from a quick list I have already made and this could be on the light side...? I will have more pic's possibly tomorrow...
