My data and picture messaging doesn't work after iPhone 4.0.1 update?

so my 3gs had 3.something firmware and was jailbroken. i wasn't paying attention and accidentally allowed iTunes to update it to 4.0.1 i don't really care about losing the functionality of being jailbroken but currently i can't check my email, surf, maps, or send picture messages (the option just isn't even there). so i am assuming there is something wrong with data being sent to and from the phone. any ideas on how to fix this?

That happened with my 3GS going from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I had to restore the phone as new and not from a backup and everything worked fine after that.

Oh come on, I was just trying to have a little fun....I was kidding, hence why I said I was kidding... :(

Oh well. OP: I'm not familiar with restoring/backing up iphones like I am with BB's, but is there a way like Blackberry to restore just individual portions of a backup?

If I had this type of problem with a BB, I would backup the whole thing to desktop manager, wipe the phone, then restore only the things I needed (like contacts, calendar, etc)...Therefore not getting back as much as possible to make sure the issue doesn't replicate itself.

Not sure if ios has anything like that, but if so you could give it a go.

won't i lose all my contacts?

No, you shouldn't if you have backups. I agree with the recommendations. It's also the advice that the Apple website would probably give too.

So I'd plug your phone into iTunes. It should say "backing up <phone name>" at the top and should spend a while doing it. Then, when it's done, in iTunes, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Devices and you should see a list of backed up devices under "Device backups". Check that the date in the right column matches today on your computer - so then you know it successfully backed up.

Then do as everyone says and do a restore. When that's done, iTunes should say something like "I see that there's a new iPhone installed. Do you want to import settings from a backup or do you want to set it up as a new phone?" Choose import settings from a backup and then choose the name of the phone. It should restore everything - including all of you SMS messages, all of your calling history, everything. It doesn't restore music and video and apps though, so when you are done restoring the data from backup, you'll need to do another sync to put all the music and apps and everything back on.

The whole process takes a long while. Be patient. When it's done, everything should be just as it was... I've never seen anything that's not backed up.

My choice would be to go to the nearest Apple store, plop it on the counter and say, "Fix it!"

Of course, as pm indicates, this only works if you live in a city or town that has an Apple store. :)

I guess it depends on how close that Apple store is to you. In my case, it's 2+ hours roundtrip. I try to fix them myself... I've never taken it to an Apple store.

something odd happened to the wife on Sunday - she came home from a trip and suddenly her MMS disappeared when she tried to send me a pic from her 3G iphone.

she hadn't backed up recently so I had to restore a 3 month old backup then upgrade to iOS 4.xx
