My damn allergies are driving me fvcking nutz!!

This spring has been a nightmare! Has not rained in forever, there were no cold snaps to kill off some of the buds, it has been prime mating season for anything green.

Over the past couple of days I have been taking Stahist at night (knocks me out like a light and I get horrible dry mouth) and I also take Allegra-D during the day (makes me a zombie, try to offset it by drinking coffee all day long).

I know some of you guys have bad allergies, what else do you do to help ease the pain of spring?

where do you live? Allergy season hasnt quite hit here (central PA). Usually my life is miserable from about mid-april to mid-june though. I take allegra during that period, and it helps, but not completely.

I did allergy shots when I was younger (10-15 yrs ago), and they got rid of my allergies completely for about 10 years after I stopped taking the shots. Now they are back though, so I might start getting shots again...

reposting from cat allergy thread:
Get a Claritin knockoff from Target; much cheaper
Get a prescription for Flonase (though choose the generic version to save cash), to help with the sneezing/runny nose
Get a HEPA air filter for your house
Buy a HEPA air cleaner
Consider buying and using a HEPA vacuum cleaner and vacuuming the apartment once or twice a week

Now I used to have pretty bad cat and pollen allergies; I still use the Flonase, but only when I have a new cat in my apartment (read: A feral I've caught on my porch and am trying to tame and adopt out), and I take the Claritin daily. I can't tell I ever had allergies now. I almost never vacuum the apartment, I only used the air purifier for a couple of months, and I'm fine. I still use the HEPA filter for my house, but I figure why not? The cheap crap I used to use didn't really collect any dust, so I might as well use something that keeps the air cleaner and might at least help slightly with pollen allergies.

Good luck.

I know how you feel. I came back from lunch today and there were literally clouds of pollen blowing around in the parking lot.

Ask a doctor. There is a new kind of medicine which cures some kinds of pollen allergy, instead of merely removing the symptoms. I do not know if it released yet, but it should be close.

I washed my car Saturday at 13:30, went home and did a couple of things, came out 4 hours later and my car was already yellow!!!

This is the worst Spring I can remember..

I live in Alabama. What are these shots supposed to do?

They help you build an immunity to the allergens. You take them once a week for a year or so, and then you should be cured for several years afterward.

You really only rinse the pollen off this time of year...not really washing 😉

More specifically they (hopefully) change your antibody response to the allergen from IgE to IgG.

For the OP, my allergic fits are best treated with pseudoephedrine and claritin. Yesterday was a struggle, though. I'm going to OD on pseudoephedrine one day. 🙁

I'm going for an allergy test tomorrow morning. Does anyone know approximately how much the shots are, providing they find something I am allergic to. I know there may be different prices and insurance rates are all different. Just curious what to expect.

Friend gets allergy shots and pays $10/wk. The rest is covered by the insurance.

I'll glady pay that. Although I'm not sure that allergies is exactly what I have. I've been getting really bad sinus "infections" in that last few months. In fact, 3 within 7 weeks recently. They want me to get the allergy test done to see if I'm allergic to somehting and causing them. 😕

When I use to live in Central Cal where it's nothing but agriculture I would get severe allergies every spring. Now that I've moved down to SoCal it hasn't been that bad anymore. If I go up there for a weekend it'll take about half a week for me to recover and get over the allergy reaction.

I know this sounds bad, but try to stay indoor. Shut the windows, use AC, recycle mode, make sure your car's cabin air filter is clean.

I hear that pollen levels are highest early in the day. If you have to mow the yard, use a face mask. Take your antihistamines preventatively. I take Allegra daily and in an emergency, also take Benadryl for really bad symptoms. I also take Sudafed only every 3 or 4 days due to the rebound effect.

I remember from years ago hearing that the body would build resistance to the same type of anthistamine medication, so it helped to 'rotate' the type of pills. I don't know if that's still true.

I've used all sorts of pharmaceutical crap. It usually does something, just never enough. I started using Sinus Buster for the past 6 months and it's been great. Think of it as getting even with your sinus cavity. 😀

Loratadine (Allegra/Claratin) has been working well for me. I just buy the generic version, take a pill a day, and no more itchy eyes/runny nose/etc.

you could try chiropractic adjustments... upper cervical adjustments, to be exact.

no, i don't know exactly how it will help your allergies... no, it's not scientifically proven. this advice is all purely anecdotal, based on my personal experiences and a lot of others' as well.

edit: here are a couple articles i dug up for you... take from them what you will.

apparently, after reading a couple other articles, eating cereal increases the likelihood of suffering pollen allergies.
