My Dad's laptop got broken

I'm heading after work to try to fix my dad's laptop. He wasn't very specific over the phone but he says the joint that is the connection between the laptop and the LCD display is broken on one side. He can't open up the laptop because he's afraid he might break it further. Any suggestions on what I should do?

If I cant fix it, would HP/Compaq fix it? its been slight more than a year.

its physically broken, what more can you do other than replace it or get parts for it? your not going to be able to polish/click off a broken LCD hinge.

hahah yeah I tried telling that to my dad, but he's adamant about me going over to try to fix it.

Most likely the hinge is broken, very common when laptops start to age. Usually the hinge is integrated with the back panel of the LCD. In which case, you just need to look for the appropriate parts. Ebay is good. If you have something like a Dell, it's very easy to find the used parts on ebay (one big advantage of buying a mainstream system). In my case, I was able to find a replacement back panel with the hinge for about $20. Installation took all of 5 minutes. Don't bother trying to glue or seek some home remedy -- it's temporary at best. Eventually you will need to replace the broken part.

I had the back hinge go out on my Thinkpad 710C. Unfortunately, due to a strong bump while using the laptop in a vehicle with the hinge damaged, I managed to somehow fry the backlight in the screen, and the screen itself went shortly thereafter.

I would strongly recommend trying to find replacement case parts (buy a dead laptop off of Ebay for just the case?), and to not operate it, at least in an environment where it might be jostled, without fixing the issue.
