He will never use any of the advanced features.. But I'd still like him to get something good.

I think IS would be a nice feature to have, too.

Are there other cameras that would be a better choice? What about the PowerShot SD1000?

Totally different class, I know, but maybe the overall featureset would be more appropriate.
 
I just got my SD1000 today so I am biased, but I think it is a great camera for someone not interested in too many features. The features it does have are useful and easy to use. Picture quality is as good as any person who isn't a photographer could want, and the size is freaking amazing. It fits in my pocket better than my cell phone. Plus NewEgg has a special on it right now for $235 w/1gb card.

Take a look at the Fuji F20, much better camera than the SD1000 and the A570is and the price is a lot better too. Believed Dell had a sale on it for roughly 100 couple days ago. It doesn't have IS, but it has a SuperCCD for high ISO which pretty much basically does what IS does and gives you other advantages too.

Nothing special about the SD1000 other than its size.
