gawd, i cant believe what he choose to do. i offered to give him an athlon 1700 for free and he buys a pentium4 that costs over 140 dollars. all he had to do was buy a 80 dollar nforce2 mobo and i would have given him the ram and the amd. but no. he buys a $18 refurb mobo that was yanked from some hp just so he can have his precious intel. he is only intel, and no one can convince him otherwise. i bet that when my 2500 i am getting in a few months that is alot slower (mhz wize) crushes his pentium4 that costs 50 bucks more he will think differant. either that or his 18 dollar mobo blows up and burns the house down.

Man, calm down. Some people buy what they like. I'm an Intel guy so I'm gonna buy intel. Its just the way it works. Think of all those people who still buy American Cars😛

Call me an Intel fanboy but I'm happy with my 2.8 ghz 800 mhz @ 3.4 with my Intel IC7-G and 1024mb of HyperX PC3500 🙂

Different strokes for different folks

thats the thing, his HP mobo only supports pc2100 and the type that was before that. plus it has a lockedbios, limited expansio. that slow memory is going to kill anyhope of a higher fsb. plus from an economic stand point he could saved 80 bucks by doing what i told him. becuase he could have had a free cpu that was a great o/c. and i am sure that a nforce2 mobo is alot better than that hp thingy in terms of quailty and features

Will your dad even knows the difference? I'm sure he is anticpiating the arrival of Doom 3. Great, you beat him in benchmarks, and games "FPS". Wow, oh wow. Just support him and help him out with his new system, if he needs it.

So, uhh, what does he do with his PC? For most people, I don't think a locked BIOS and limited memory options really make a difference as long as it runs. Simmer down now, simmer down. Does he surf and do e-mail or does he do video editing and stare at benchmarks all day?

Haha, like $50 is some huge amount of money to your dad.

were talking about the guy who ran a celeron 333 and a tnt2 M64 for 4 years becuase he was too cheap to upgrade and yes, he does game

Intel chips have most of the support so there aren't a lot of driver errors and such. Also, if your heatsink/fan was to die on you, the Intel chip would slow down, while the AMD chip would burn itself to death.

I've never had an Intel machine with the problem of randomly shutting down because the CPU overheats. maybe your dad is smarter than you.

mine has never overheated😛

ASUS C.O.P (CPU Overheating Protection) is a hardware protection circuit that automatically shuts down the system power before temperatures go high enough to permanently damage your CPU

btw i am not saying that that pentium4 is a bad chip. i admit that it is a great chip, i also sadly admit that intels latest cpus are superior, its just that $18 hp mobo

Quit being a smartass and just help out your dad.

My dad drove home a brand new 2001 Camry a few years ago. My parents are more then happy with it. I, on the other hand, can't stand driving it. But, I don't care. It suits my parents and they like it.

If your dad is happy with what he bought, more power to him. If he wanted your opinion and input, he would have asked for it before he bought anything.

The intel is ok...but the motherboard? Why the heck would you pay $18 for an oem refurb? I'll take that 1700+ and an nforce 2 board thanks.

You know nothing abut computers do you fanboy.

The CPU has no fault with driver errors, that is a chipset, or other item that causes that.

UPDATE: alright, believe it or not, the $18 HP refurb mobo did not work!:Q

well, the people actually refunded his money and he is going to send his cpu back for a refund also, alas we have not socket 478. maybe he will take me up on my athlon offer after all.

Sucker! I got lucky when I bought my mobo off of Ebay as an untested board. With all the jumper pins bent in every direction and the AGP, AMR, and PCI slots all scratched up like someone threw it across the driveway, I thought I was SOL. I had 2 out of 2 PCI slots that I got shafted out of. Oh well... I'm running my ethernet on USB and I'll just put my firewire card in my sister's HP. Not bad for $9 I guess.
