My dad just bought home a 04 Prius....

So my dad works at Toyota here in VT, and was the first person on the east coast to be certified to sell them. He was one of the first people in north america to drive one when he took home the japenesse verison several years ago, and he brought the new 04 model home tonight.

This car is AMAZING. It is the ulimate geek car in every way. All you have to have is the remote in your pocket and just touch the handle and the car unlocks. It even has push button start. The navigation is AWESOME, and it guided me to Mcdonalds no problem 😛 I even floored it around a turn and handled suprisingly well. It even has freaking bluetooth and a microphone built into the dash 😛 The HID display was really neat and they have really increased the size of the car, but kept the milage up. 60 miles in the city! Thats just nuts. Overall I would definlty by one, but my car is 21 years old and I cant afford 25K. I will have to take some pics before he takes it to one of the local colleges tomorow, but damn everyone should go buy one now.

From the Edmund's website:

No one is ever going to look at your Toyota Prius and shout "Nice car!"

After taking a look at some detailed photos of that car, I agree. That's one not so good looking car.

As far as looks go, sure its not the best looking from the outside, but they have definilty made it more attractive. The interior is sweet, and the 6 disc in dash changer is sweet. Oh btw heres a tiny hack that I shouldnt be telling anyone.

In order to get dvd's to play, you have to click the e-brake once in order to trick the car to think its stoped 😛

Its now a hatcback, and has a lot more room inside, plus the back seats fold down which is cool. Sure it would be nice to have it in a different style body, but the technology is just amazing. I drive a car that was made in 1984, and this car just blew me away. Voice navigation is a must have 😛

😀

I agree, they should give it a little more style.

I still think it's a really cool car though.

Agreed. I don't know if style is a limitation, but if you could make it look more normal they'd be selling like hotcakes. I'd like to see more of a Ford Focus or VW Jetta chasis instead.

Yeah. Something..

The automakers seem to feel a need to differentiate the "futuristic" products though, and making them look weird seems to be the way they do it.

Sure, the mileage is quite impressive, but it's still one person driving around in *one* car -- which tends to clog up the roads. People need to rely more on public transportation.

I think the 04 Pruis is one of the cars to get. Why bother getting a Camry when you can get this for a similar price.

It looks unique ( a whole lot better than the Camry), has almost the same interior room, gets MUCH better mileage, is quite peppy and decent to drive, and is priced just right.

I think Toyota has a winner on their hands. And I commend them for making a hybrid car in such an attractive (i mean features, price, etc..not just looks) and complete package.

careful about that, base price is 20K but the options he got is at least 24K
there's a hybrid version of the honda civic too
you'll need to check the honda website for that, no links 4 u!
When I had to choose between the civic and the prius, I would have gotten the prius if it was $20K w/ GPS, but, because of that, and funky interior, I went with the civic hybrid. The prius does perform better in the city though (nyc).

should everyone buy a prius? no!
should every automaker use a hybrid engine to replace standone IC? YES!
and we need cleaner diesel too

Prius is a great car. Toyota knowingly sells it at a loss, probably to lower fleet fuel economy for the EPA.

GREAT! Then when I'm driving behind a granny and am ready to crash into the back of her car out of sheer frustration, I can't cuz I realize my car doesn't have enough pickup to close the gap between us. Then I pull the car over, pull my 9 outta the glove compartment and shoot myself in the head!

While I realize that the prius is a very cool car, and if I had a decent job and a long commute I'd most likely get one, but hybrid is not ready to replace combustion engines just yet. I need my speed, especially with douchebag massachusetts drivers, I'd die if I didn't have some zip to get me away from people that bother/scare/infuriate me.

They do it for experience, and to gain market share. They already have a second generation Hybrid out. That puts them well ahead of the competition, and that's important, because the market is clearly headed in this direction. Everyone else except Honda, is still in the design and engineering phase.

You possibly don't have an understanding of how Hybrid technology works and what potential it has to aid not only efficiency, but performance as well. Read up on it. Use your imagination as far as how it could be used to make a F-150 Lightning or a Mustang even faster.

I'll help clue you in to the first important fact about hybrids: They DO use internal combustion engines for 100% of their propultion energy. The hybrid system just helps use that internal combustion engine more efficiently.

i recommend YOU read up on the prius. the electric system is actually used for propulsion.

It burns gasoline. You never plug it in. 100% of the energy that moves it down the road is derived from gasoline, in its internal combustion engine. I stand by my original statement.
