My dad is strange sometimes when it comes to money...

I find it funny that hes always complaining about how much this or that costs and how he has no money....

But then he turns around and buys a $1000 saw for him to widdle wood on... I just think its entertaining sometimes...

Anyone else parents like this, or is it just me?

Hell...I'm like that :) It's the fact that you're not getting anything physical for your money. For instance, I need electricity, and I like having the AC on, as well as a multitude of electronic gadgetry. But when I get a $150 electric bill, I'm like "Man...this sucks!" Later next week I'll buy a $200 wireless router to play with and say "Wow...that was a good deal!" :)

See what I'm saying?

Haha, i do... But with him its funny. He will b!tch & moan about getting a new tv (our current tv is from 1983 and were lucky if it turns on) but will spend endless money on random tools...

Yes, that saw is expensive. I'm also a woodworker and I look at it this way:

People don't hesitate to spend a couple of grand on a computer that's going to be useless in five years. An expensive, high quality tool will last your entire life, and probably my son's too.

I buy only the best when it comes to tools. (Jet, Delta, Makita, DeWalt, and PowerMatic exclusively) I'll bet I've got a minimum of $20k in tools, probably more. I've got at least $10k in woodworking tools alone. But, I'll never wish I had something better, they'll still be just as good as my skills grow, and it will be just as useful in 20 years as it is now.

"oh we can't help you pay for college. We can't afford it."

Two months after i went away to college, they buy a new car.
