So my dad's getting ready to build a new computer and he's building his first AMD system. He and I both are longtime Intel users and he's wanting to switch over to AMD this time around and wanted me to find out if what he's got is all going to work together. I don't know much about AMD stuff so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks.
- SOLTEK "SL-K8AN2E-GR" NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU RETAIL
- ROSEWILL RADEON 9600 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "RW9600-128D" RETAIL
- Thermaltake Silent PurePower, 420W ATX power supply.UL, CSA, TUV, CE Approved. Intel Pentium 4 Compliant
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor Retail
- Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM (just one of these since the motherboard has only two DIMM slots)
- cheap floppy drive
- cheap ATX case
Everything else, he already has from hot deals here and there. Hard drives, DVD-RW, keyboard, mouse, etc. The stuff above is all that he doesn't already have.
The purpose of the purchase is to get a new system to replace the P3 733 that they currently have. It's mostly used for general computing: email, internet, word processing, scanning documents, that type of thing. My sister plays a few games here and there but it's all Harry Potter-type stuff. My dad's computer will never be used for HL2 or Doom 3 or anything like that so there's no point in getting anything higher than an R9600. I basically just want to make sure that his motherboard, processor, and RAM will all play nice.
I'm not totally sure of what his budget even is for the build but I doubt it's enormously high. If anyone has any suggestions on what parts to get instead of what's listed (like maybe a good motherboard with more than 2 DIMM slots for a comparable price so he can get 2x256MB RAM instead of 1 512MB, that sort of thing). Thanks for any comments and/or suggestions.
