He has a 2001 Buick Park Avenue Turbo Charged...went in for a noise and the dealer charged him $1200. Broken down to $600. parts $300. labor, and the rest was Misc charges...tired to sell him tires too, but he refused. How badly was he taken?

Bad...
Dealers are for car purchases and warrenty repairs.....

I agree, he doesn't listen though. He even goes to the dealer religiously to get his oil changed...

:Q Oil Changes? That's probabaly the quickest, and easiest thing you could do your self to save that 20+ by getting it done at the dealership or fluids shop.

I know, that's what my husband does with our cars, $7.00-10. worth of material and it's done. My dad swears that if the dealership doesn't do it, your warranty is nullified...he won't even go to a jiffy lube or anything, so he drived the hour drive when there is an oil place 10 min from home...he just won't listen to anyone...

Actually, I go to the dealer for oil changes also. I make an appointment, take it in on a Saturday and in half an hour I get my car back, cleaned and lubed for about $25. Can't beat that actually.

Oil changes on my car would be a real hassle. I would need to jack up the car, slide under it and contort myself into all kinds of unnatural positions to get to the oil filter. Not to mention the hassle of used motor oil diposal. Forget it. Not worth my time to do it myself.

Dealer probably replaced all 4 rotors, 4 brake pads, and brake fluid which result in $600 in parts.
However, there is probably no need to replace any of that.
It might get fixed by riding on brake with moderate force to clean off the rotor.

how many miles on the car? Why the hell would a 3 year old car need 1200 dollars worth a repairs (isnt that like 25% of the cars kbb value)

Actually this is the second brake job they have sold him...first one was 25,000 miles ago. ~55,000 miles total...

Having myself managed dealership repair shop this is true and un true. If you do your own oil change on your new car make sure to keep a record of it. Most cases your owners manual will have a section dedicated to repairs done. Keep all of your reciepts. If you dont and the engine locks up that is the dealerships escape goat and since you have no proof it had ever been done you can be stuck with the bill.

As for the guys brakes yes he did getowned. It is in the dealerships best intrest to sell you everything you dont need. May tell you need rotors when they could of been turned insted because the mechnic will make more money not having your car taking up his stall. He could of bought a Chiltons manual, some tools, and a few other things and wouldnt of come close to $300 or the entire job. After reading some of these threads today I have decided to offer my services and have made a thread if your close to where I live.

Thanks for that info! As for your location, you are pretty close according to mapquest...closer than the dealership...but my dad wouldn't ever leave the "relationship" he has with the dealer...

Total Est. Time: 36 minutes Total Est. Distance: 26.72 miles

Did that brake job include a tube of KY? 😀

I rank dealer gararge repair men right up there with lawyers for being honest

They tried pulling some similar sh!at on my step daughter. She went in for a brake job and also needed rotors and brake lines. The bastards wanted to charge her 900 bucks until I got off the phone with the service manager 😉 They were charging to take apart and put back together the front end of the 3 times!!!

I hate to say it but the dealership has your dad whipped into tinking they are the repair gods. That is a shame that some people will go through stuff like that and they are only acting like friends to get into your wallet. It may be at the point where they can tell him his light bulb grease needs to be changed and he will believe them. I hate to sound like this and I have worked at some that did this. There are some honest repair places out there but they are very few and far between. I can remeber having customers of mine that would tell me do what ever needs to be done no matter the cost because they trusted me. I have never done or sold anyone anything they never needed but I worked at places that did when I wanst the manager and I would have to sell stuff they didnt need because my job would require it and would get fired if I didnt meet a quota. It is pathetic that some would do this and sounds as though where you father is going they are doing him in and laughing at what they had done behind their backs. Unless he wen in there with the brakes grinding and making a hell of a ruckus then maybe not but if he went in because of a squeal then I would find it hard to believe it would cost so much. If he would like I would be more then happy next time he needed some work like a tune up or something to come over check it all over give him my idea of what needs to be done and then take it to the dealership and watch them sell him everything under the sun. I would have to reson to lie to him about what may be needed because he would of paid me to give the truth. And since I wont be making anything off doing the work or parts or anything other then giving him some experance I have no reason to lie 🙂 unlike the dealership would.

Brakes are typically a no-brainer (if you have disks). Drums typically last 100k miles and normally are on rears, so you don't need to touch them most of the time. Front disks should "brake" down like this - $40 or so for the entire set of front pads, $60-$80 or so for aftermarket rotors (most people don't bother turning rotors anymore, causes more problems than they're worth). So for less than $150 you should be able to do front disks yourself in an hour or two if reasonably competent.

Unless you're a fanatic, brake fluid doesn't need changed but every few years or so, some people never! You may need to clean and re-lube the slider pins on the caliper, and rarely does a caliper need changed (I wouldn't bother with an overhaul, just buy a re-built).

He got BF'd big time!
